In the spirit of Thanksgiving and football, I advocate authors, in particular self-published ones, to take an opportunity to give thanks to their reviewers. Not for the positive reviews, and certainly not the Amazon single paragraph, five-star gushers, but rather the negative ones.

Welcome to August! Check out the right side of the blog page to find out what reviews we are working on for this month. For our first August In-News update, we’ve interviewed Todd Fonseca, author of The Time Cavern. Todd has kept in contact with the Lulu Book Review since we reviewed his book back in May, updating us on the success of his book, both in marketing and in sales. At a recent book signing, he sold over 50 copies!

A recent fascination with my own backyard birds has led to a fun summer hobby. I now have six bird feeders in my yard, and have purchased 3 various books all about birds. I even made a trip to the zoo recently well, just for the birds. So, I immediately began searching Lulu for good bird books. Although I found several-mostly coffee table photo type books-one of the best is called BIRDS, and it’s put out by a publisher calling itself TheTeachersDesk.info.

Chapter 1 of Paul Ciccone’s book is entitled “Believe It or Not,” which were my words exactly as I began reading his book for this review. I could NOT believe the tight cogent prose this author has penned! Believe it or not, I almost felt a bit under educated to even be reading this. Ciccone’s writing reads like a fine college thesis, but he has the aptitude to write theory or psychology textbooks, even speeches, for a living if he wanted to.

What draws us to the personal diaries of others? Remember reading Anne Frank’s back in high school? While recently on vacation, I picked up a brochure type stapled printing of a Civil War diary a woman had self-published and made available in a local gift shop. I was immediately drawn into it on page one. Having just finished Ann Pino’s superb Lulu book, My New-Found Land, I yearned for more of the personal and intimate writings of others.
