Unlike Lulu, once you have uploaded your files to CreateSpace, you do NOT immediately have the capability to order a copy of your work. Once you have submitted your files, you receive an email confirmation that states the following: “Thank you for submitting your book. We will review your files and book information and notify you of the results via email shortly, typically within 24-48 hours.”

I was first introduced to CreateSpace in 2007. Once my book, Stealing Wishes, was eliminated from the semifinals for the first Amazon ABNA contest, I was given my consolation prize which was a CreateSpace membership and the ability to publish and order a free copy of my book. I chose not to do this at that time and published the book with Lulu instead. But ever since we here at LLBR decided to add CreateSpace books to our review portfolio, I thought it would be a good experience to create something with CreateSpace and learn more about this company.

When I saw this book posted for a review request, I knew that I wanted to read and review it. The title says it all. I immediately thought of the past several years of attempting to bring my own mother into the computer age. It has been a slow and go process and one day, she will finally give in and buy a computer. The frustrating thing is that she has taken some classes and does very well in the classes, but then when it comes time to buy, she postpones because “she needs to know more about that whole internet thing.” I haven’t given up hope.

In yesterday’s post about an article in the Times I failed to mention the POD success story of Lisa Genova. Lisa tried desperately to find a traditional publisher for her book, Still Alice. After many failed attempts, she opted to self-publish the book with iUniverse and began selling copies out of the trunk of her car. Simon and Schuster ended up picking up the book last year on a half million dollar contract and Still Alice hit the NYT Bestseller list this month!

The New York Times published a very interesting and thorough article yesterday about the growth of the POD industry and how traditional markets are even suffering.

Bathroom duty has been the subject of many books, mostly targeted toward children. Some of my favorites are The Gas We Pass and Everyone Poops. But just search the word “poop” at Amazon and you’ll find books for adults as well. Dan Marvin’s book, Briefs for the Reading Room, is one such book, but don’t worry. It’s not about what’s in the bowl, but instead is a book designed to give you something to read while waiting for the end result.

Opening the cover of Motherless Child – stories from a life is like arriving at Sarah’s home, where she welcomes you with that special brand of southern hospitality, invites you to sit down for a spell and have a nice tall drink of ice tea while she tells you stories from her past. Reading this book brought back memories from my own childhood of sitting in my grandmother’s parlor and having her tell us stories of life from yesteryear, while gently rocking back and forth in her rocking chair. I could almost hear the creak of the floorboards as her chair went back and forth over that well worn track.

As 2008 comes to a close, each of us here at LLBR decided to take a moment to reflect on what this year has meant to us as both authors and reviewers…

I first ran across Will and the Soaring Seed while reading some posts on the Lulu Promote Your Book Forum. I was not actually looking for books to review, but doing some research prior to drafting a post promoting the Where in the World is Misfit McCabe? project, which is featured here on the Lulu Book Review under the WITW is MMC tab. As I was reading through the multitude of posts plugging authors’ work, I read a post by author and illustrator Devin Boone and his description captured me enough to click the link to take a look at the children’s book he was promoting. I was glad that I did.

With a turkey in the oven and the Macy’s parade on television, I thought I’d take a moment to wish all the writers and readers out there a Happy Thanksgiving. The older I get, the more I’ve come to enjoy this holiday even more than I do Christmas. It’s a nice slow four day holiday weekend for me to eat, watch TV, read, put up my tree, and yes, write. I’m currently in the process of polishing a novel I wrote last year from August till December.
