In the spirit of making changes, there is one more change that we would like to introuduce to the LL Book Review – Pick Me! Statuses. Since we receive questions on a fairly regular basis asking for the status of whether or not a book will be reviewed, we will now add on the status of the submitted works. The statuses will be:

    1. Pending Consideration – This simply means that not all reviewers have had a chance to go through the process of determining whether they would like the book to consider for review.
    2. Under Consideration – A reviewer has selected the book to take a more in depth look at the book, with the expectation of reviewing the selection. Note: This does not mean the book will definitely be reviewed, but that based on the preview, we felt a spark of interest and wanted to read more.
    3. Being Read
    4. – Self-explanatory.

    5. Review Scheduled – The book has been reviewed and is awaiting a scheduled date to post.

The below is a status update for those books which have had their Pick Me! entries removed while under the old format – the list should give everyone an understanding as to why it sometimes takes awhile for your book to be read and reviewed. The entries will be removed from the list once the review goes live or a declined notification is sent.

    Subject: Requesting Book Review
    An Impossible Dream Story
    Dog Ear Publishing
    ISBN: 978-14575-0680-2

Dear Reviewers of LL Book Review,

With both pride and hope, it is a distinct pleasure to present my recently released novel An Impossible Dream Story to you for review consideration on http://www.LLbookreview.com . You will find love, laughter and loss; spirituality, spirit-crushing and spirited conversation, and you will even hear spirits in one believable paranormal event. You may find it “pleasantly” different from everyday love stories.

Many of us suffer broken dreams and loves in our lives, but when a lifetime of busted dreams is essential to achieving the “big-time” impossible; then we, like my lead protagonist Vinny Pirelli, become daydream believers. Without arrogance, I am confident that many readers will gain something personal when exploring An Impossible Dream Story, thereby adding to their own journeys.

Encouraged to pursue Main Street notice of this story, by a host of early readers, with a variety of side street backgrounds, perhaps the most cherished praise to date flaunted the term “relevant”. Other expressions included “entertaining”, “uplifting”, “fun and funny”, “worthy”, “captivating” and simply “thank you”. Many have liked the uniqueness of each chapter ending with a set of original lyrics or simple poem, (both light and dark), which enhances the story. It is time to test-ride this bigger review avenue.

Please find my video trailer and website links below. I can provide you with your preferred personal copy (signed or not), PDF by email, or Kindle gift. Kindly select, and send me a mailing address if appropriate. A copy of the recent Press Release will accompany any submission, or beforehand, if preferred.

Thank you in advance for your thoughtful consideration in taking this bicycle love story for a trial spin. I sincerely hope you enjoy the ride, and that I win your decision to write a professional review. You may be sure I will jump at an opportunity to tour by blog, or comply with any book contests. I gladly keep my commitments.

    Warm regards,
    J.V. Petretta

  3. Pearce Hansen

    Attn: Peter

I am interested in having you review my second novel Stagger Bay.

Markus, Stagger Bay’s protagonist, is a man who overcame a horrendous childhood and criminal youth to go straight and raise a family. His violent past makes him an easy fall guy to frame for a gruesome mass murder and he’s sentenced to life without parole, losing his family in the process.

Exonerated and freed on DNA evidence after seven years, Markus is shortly thrust into a bloody do-or-die fracas during an elementary school hostage situation, becoming an overnight hero. Everyone wants in on the media feeding frenzy; to his dismay, paparazzi and news crews hound him wherever he goes. Unfortunately they’re not the only ones stalking him.

Can Markus find the path back into his estranged son’s heart? What’s Markus supposed to do, when he discovers fifteen minutes of fame is the worst thing that could ever happen to him? What can he do, now that his town is hunting ground to serial killers and rogue cops working together – and the shadowy force behind them is turning its cold, deadly eye straight at him?

Stagger Bay is a battle of wills, where every moral choice seems only to increase the body count. It’s in the tradition of Paul Cain’s break-neck-paced Fast One, or Geoffrey Household’s feral man-against-the-world Rogue Male. Stagger Bay should appeal to readers looking for a fast paced, hyper-violent thriller.

Ken Bruen (author of Blitz starring Jason Statham; and of London Boulevard, soon to be a major motion picture): “Stagger Bay proves what noir purists have known for a long time: Pearce Hansen is the new Prince of Noir. For years he’s been turning out stunning nuggets of sheer black gold, and now he finally comes into his ascendancy with this mesmerizing novel.

“Imagine James Ellroy coupled with George R. R. Martin and overseen by Charles Willeford. But PH really needs no comparison to any other writer; he’s created his own compelling dark universe that ratchets up noir to an astonishing level.”

Jason Starr (bestselling author of The Pack and The Follower): “Pearce Hansen is the real deal, the Edward Bunker of our generation. Stagger Bay is a searing, powerful, heartbreaking novel, and an important contribution to contemporary crime fiction literature.”

Anthony Neil Smith (Editor of Plots with Guns!, Associate Editor of the Mississippi Review, and author of All the Young Warriors): “Pearce is a wild man, and demands your attention. Hansen is definitely one of the gonzo crowd and deserves a stage with a loud amplifier and some bright lights.”

View it’s particulars at http://www.amazon.com/Stagger-Bay-ebook/dp/B006ZW650Q. I can supply it in Sony epub, PDF, or Word — whichever you prefer.

    Thanks always,
    Pearce Hansen

Can you imagine a mystery being created and solved in 100 words? That’s the purpose of Cops, Crooks & Other Stories in 100 Words, a new, short ebook of flash fiction. The book contains mini mysteries, mini puzzles with satisfying, unexpected endings. I’d like to submit it to you for a review.

Seven stories in this collection have been published within the last two months in four different fiction magazines: Stymie Magazine, MicroHorror, Flashshot and 101 Words. Each story is complete with a protagonist, a challenge and a resolution.

My background includes work as a newspaper police reporter and as an advertising copywriter. I’m author of three previous (John Wiley & Sons, Inc) nonfiction books, one of which was translated into four foreign languages and selected by the Book of the Month Club. Most recently I was a correspondent for the San Francisco Chronicle.

A woman makes a daring escape after robbing a bank–with help from a passing cop. A father saves his married daughter–by killing her husband. These are some of the seemingly complex stories begun and resolved in exactly 100 words.

Crime/mystery/police stories make up about half this book. Also included are love stories, humor, dramas and speculative fiction.

  5. Thomas Thonson

    Dear LL Book Review:

Not too long ago you reviewed my collection of short stories, “You Don’t Die of Love,” quite favorably. So I’m hoping you’d be interested in my new novel, “The Garment of Destiny.”

    Thanks,
    Thomas Thonson

When Eli Steadman, a mixed-race student raised by a white family, fakes a hate crime on a college campus so that he can win the student body presidency, he sets off a firestorm of events that reverberate through many people’s lives with unexpected consequences. The controversy alienates Eli from his family and renders him vulnerable to a web of competing agendas by a cast of self-serving and craven enablers –– both black and white. Soon he has betrayed almost everything he believes in. Set in a small Colorado mountain town in 2005 with Hurricane Katrina playing out on television screens all across the country, The Garment of Destiny (98,580) is a novel that turns a gimlet eye on the landscape of American life. Along the way it finds both dark comedy and tender tragedy, and is sure to be as controversial as it is riveting.

I would appreciate it if you would review my self-published e-book, “The Boy Who Loved Ants: Edward O. Wilson.” As a boy, famed scientist Edward O. Wilson spent his happiest days outdoors hunting for fish, snakes, and bugs in Florida and Alabama. My book shows how the shy boy who loved ants grew into the man who became a world leader in nature conservation. Written for ages 7 and up, its pages include fun facts about ants.

Although a Harvard professor emeritus, Wilson says that he has never outgrown his “bug stage” and I hope that my book will appeal to the many children who still love bugs, and to their families who hope to encourage their children to care for the environment.

While I note many of your reviewers specialize in fiction, some of them may have or know children who would enjoy this short book. If you use the link below, to Smashwords, the book can be downloaded for free using the coupon MB66Y, and it is also available on Amazon.com. My books are also listed on my author page on the Amazon site.

Available as an ebook at http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/90845

    Hello,
I’m wondering if LL Book Review is interested in reviewing my historical romance, Romancing Olive. It was published by BookBaby.

1891 . . . Spinster librarian, Olive Wilkins, is shocked to learn of her brother’s violent death at a saloon gaming table. Compelled to rescue and raise his children, Olive travels to Ohio, intending to return to her Philadelphia home with her niece and nephew. Little does she know that the children have come to love their caretaker, widower Jacob Butler. Will Olive return home without them or learn to love Jacob as well?

Thanks for your time and interest in promoting indie authors.

  8. Jay Province

My name is Jay Province. I am the author of The Summer Set, a young adult novel (95k) set in 1956 Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The novel is equally appealing to boys and girls from the ages of 11 years and up. The initial unbiased reviews of Amazon readers in that age group are uniformly five-star rated. Sullivan, a 13 year old eighth-grader, puts it on his top shelf – above The Hunger Games and Harry Potter. A brief synopsis (296 words) follows:

In the summer of 1956 two teenagers rescue a drowning woman from the Susquehanna’s turbulent waters, and their predictable lives suddenly veer on a deadly detour. A tall foreboding man clutching a snake-headed staff and chain-smoking through a hole in his throat wants their names. Dark men in black cars are shadowing their movements.

Fourteen year-old catcher Peter ‘Chumbucket’ Miller and his best friend pitcher Mike DeSorcier begin the summer on a mission to capture the World Series championship of their youth baseball league. Spying on a league meeting from a sweltering attic perch they uncover a group of extra-dimensional beings infiltrating the league. During their breathless escape, the boys discover two things: they are in mountains of trouble and they need help. Assistance (and more trouble) arrives in the form of two daring and mystifying girls – the unusual Karen Croft and the beautiful Jo Munro. Together, the teens must solve the mystery of the Noqumiut before a fateful August lunar eclipse.

Bizarre and comical events trail the foursome’s investigation: Santa and his merry elf magically appear in June running for their lives from a town hall fire; a teen girl flies her Cessna from the scene of a refinery explosion; and a dead body is left as a present on a leather couch – carefully wrapped in a mink coat and holding a red gift bow.

Unlikely sources aid their efforts. These include an Eskimo shaman, a magic stone carving of a lively seal, a ferociously loyal dog, and an opponent from Roswell, New Mexico whose talents (and origins) may literally be out of this world.

The Summer Set is a humorous, intense, action-packed story about friends, enemies and the pursuit of winning it all. The novel is for all story lovers ages twelve and up.

The Summer Set is my debut novel. I studied creative writing under Michael Glenday at Purdue University and Richard Tillinghast at Sewanee University. I am requesting the honor of your review of my novel. I would be happy to send you a trade paperback copy. The digital format with three chapter preview can be found at this URL to help with your decision:

  9. Chris Kridler

    Dear LL Book Review critics:

My name is Chris Kridler, and I’m the author of a new adventure novel about storm chasers, “Funnel Vision.” I’m a storm chaser and award-winning journalist, and my experiences helped inform and inspire the book. I’d be honored if you would consider reviewing it.

    The essentials:
“Funnel Vision,” a novel by Chris Kridler
Published by Sky Diary Productions (paperback and e-book self-published through CreateSpace, Kindle, Nook and Smashwords)
    Amazon paperback page: http://www.amazon.com/Funnel-Vision-Chris-Kridler/dp/0984913904/ref=tmm_pap_title_0
Book page on my web site: http://chriskridler.com/books

Here’s a summary: Judy Hale, a Kansas photographer, chases storms in part to relive and vanquish the tornado that fractured her young life and that of her sister Shannon, a directionless coquette. Jack Andreas, a handsome, devil-may-care researcher on his way to his PhD, chases tornadoes to lose himself in their power and mystery. He also chases women, and when he and Judy cross paths, sparks fly. But Judy and Jack have dueling destinies as they interact with Shannon; a clueless newbie storm-tour operator named Brad Treat; geeky, likable chaser Robinson Marvell; and a bevy of other storm chasers as they pursue the gorgeous, violent storms of Tornado Alley. Their stories intertwine as they chase the monster storm that forces Judy to confront her deepest fears and Jack to find the courage to face the ultimate twister. With action, humor, romance and rapturous skies, “Funnel Vision” takes you into the heart of Tornado Alley — and the hearts and minds of the adventurers who populate the nomadic, geeky, exhilarating world of storm chasing.

You can learn more about the novel, get links to more editions and see a book trailer at http://chriskridler.com/books; web- and high-resolution image files of the book and of me are available at http://chriskridler.com/publicityphotos.

“Funnel Vision” has received favorable ratings on Amazon, where reviewers have called it “a fun, fast-paced book, filled with heart-thumping storm-chasing scenes” with “beautifully written descriptions.” I would be honored to have one of your independent reviewers consider it for review. I can provide an e-book or paperback.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

    Sincerely,
    Chris Kridler

    Amazon.com link: http://www.amazon.com/Pirate-Therapy-Other-Cures-Rayner/dp/098666278X

    Name: Mark A. Rayner

Book: Pirate Therapy and Other Cures

Synopsis: Ever wondered what might happen if your therapist was replaced by a pirate? Or how disquieting it would be to receive postcards from your future self? If William Shatner was elected President of the United States, what would his inaugural address sound like? Mark A. Rayner tackles these and stranger questions in his collection of short stories, essays and flash fiction that thrum with the absurd and hum with alienation, all to a humorous beat. Jesus contends with dinosaurs. Marcel Duchamp describes what happens to a Dadaist who has a monkey’s tail grafted to his butt. Whether he is explaining how Anne of Green Gables destroyed the world, or outlining Thor’s new PR strategy, Rayner entertains with wit, humor and an imagination that is one step short of certifiable.

Why: You have reviewed other humor/short fiction books, so I think you’ll like it.

  14. Jay Fingers

Hello to the LL Book Review Team and all authors! Please find below the review request for my novel GUESTLIST.

    Title: Guestlist
    Author: Jay Fingers
    Genre: Contemporary Fiction
    Web Site: http://www.jayfingers.com
    Publisher: Be Cool Books
Format: 5.5″ x 8.5″ Trade Paperback (Kindle, Nook, and ePub editions available April 2012)
    ISBN: 9780615575513
    Publication Date: March 27, 2012

Website Link to Chapter One: http://www.jayfingers.com/2012/02/14/read-chapter-one-of-guestlist-by-jay-fingers-glist/

Synopsis: Juliet Feliz moved to New York City, leaving an unfulfilling life and uncertain future behind her. However, despite her new surroundings and social circle, Juliet’s life threatens to fall in the same rut as before—that is, until she meets successful party promoter Napoleon Fey.

Napoleon introduces Juliet to an exclusive world of VIP nightclubs, luxurious parties, celebrity friends, and sparkler-adorned bottles of champagne. But when Napoleon begins to show romantic interest in Juliet, that raises the ire of a beautiful, and intimidating, ex-model named Ava.

Add to the mix Marcel Swann, a down-on-his-luck young man smitten with Ava; Byron Lord, an NBA player with an affinity for nice suits, cognac, and video vixens; Sharane and Mare, Juliet’s bickering roommates; and a host of other unforgettable characters, and you’ve got the story of a bunch of beautiful people doing some very ugly things.

Guestlist, the debut novel from Jay Fingers, is a spectacularly sexy, funny, and, at times, shocking tale of what goes on once you’ve made it past the velvet rope.

About the Author: JAY FINGERS is a freelance writer, blogger, and journalist. He has contributed to print and online publications including Billboard, soulhead, and Skin & Ink. A self-proclaimed “dandy, alcoholic, and playboy,” he grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, and lived in Miami where he worked in the nightlife industry for several years. He currently lives in Brooklyn.

Lists bring order to chaos, keeping the hoi polloi from lowering the tone at exclusive nightclubs and ensuring that hit men don’t accidentally snip the wrong brakes.

They also give people who don’t follow the news and aren’t obsessed with the personal affairs of others things to talk about – top films featuring a fruit in the title (A Clockwork Orange for number one), or top celebrities with whom I would readily fornicate if they suddenly took an interest in poor, unknown people who make up fantasy lists in bars.

We’re The Shark Guys*. Our book Tastes Like Human: The Shark Guys’ Book of Bitingly Funny Lists is a list book, but unlike some in the genre it’s not crammed with trivia – we list neither the four fattest astronauts to be launched in a lunar probe nor the top 10 people who drowned trying to build a car that floats.

Instead, we weigh in on each of the entries in a unique, irreverent, teeth-baring and editorializing essay style that reviewers went gaga for in our debut, The Man Who Scared a Shark to Death and Other True Tales of Drunken Debauchery (Penguin Global 2007), with lists like:

    People Killed While Singing Karaoke
    Great Moments in Sitting
    Weird Jesus Sightings
    Prank Calls Gone Wrong
Famous Last Words that Could Use a Do-over

…and at least one exploding whale (you’ll have to check that list out for yourself).

It’s not for the faint of heart, nor anyone in the placebo group of a hypertension study.

As traditionally published authors going the e-book route this time around, we’d appreciate it if someone on your staff can review the book in the LL Book Review.

Here you’ll find a mention of our book in the Vancouver Sun and reviews in Baltimore Reads and the Eastern Echo.

We can have a PDF file of the eBook sent to you (or ePub) at your convenience.

    Thanks.

I would appreciate it if you would read and review my new action thriller novel, Rex Randall and the Jericho Secret.

It is approx. 73,500 words long. attached is a cover image.

    press release: http://prlog.org/11821187

    website: http://www.vincecarterbooks.com

    Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007IW0ZPS

    Thanks, Vince Carter

“Move over James Bond. It’s Rex Randall in the 21st century.” This is what Vince Carter says about his
new novel, Rex Randall and the Jericho Secret. This action thriller is about an adventurous author and the
5 beautiful women with whom he lives.

    The Story.
Rex Randall is the world famous author, known for his Incognito series of books and movies.
His main character, Jason Hendrix, has a loyal following around the world, eager to read about his next
exploits. This is especially so, since it is widely known that his life is modeled on the real lifestyle of Rex.

It is an unusual lifestyle, only dreamed of by most. That’s because, in real life, Rex lives with five beautiful
women in a polyamorous, non-monogamous relationship. It is also a luxurious lifestyle, fueled by the
enormous wealth generated by all those books and movies. They want for nothing and enjoy the many
pleasures of life. They work hard, play hard, and rest easy.

In his series of thriller books, Rex’s alter ego, Jason, is a chameleon-like investigator that assumes
numerous identities to pursue his assignments. In order to give the stories an increased level of realism,
Rex spends countless months, himself, thoroughly researching key elements of the story concept by
accepting assignments in real life and donning various cover identities.

Then, with exacting detail, Rex would be able to convert his actual experiences into an exciting series of
scenes for Jason in the novels. It is the distinguishing factor that gives his books that air of authenticity, no matter how unusual the premise.

In preparation for his next novel, Rex and his five female loves, engage in their reality based research by
going undercover and posing as security consultants to the U.S. Secret Service. In the process, they
    discover the Jericho Secret.

This secret, unknown even to the Secret Service, is so explosive that, if revealed to the world, could put the
President of the United States in mortal jeopardy.

Author Vince Carter is a financial executive and not a professional basketball player. He has authored a
number of books under different pen names.

This is the first book in a series of the adventures of Rex Randall and his family.

RED FLAGS OF LOVE FRAUD — 10 signs you’re dating a sociopath
By Donna Andersen, author of Lovefraud.com

HOW TO SPOT LOVE FRAUD BEFORE YOU LOSE YOUR HEART (AND EVERYTHING ELSE)

You’ve met someone new—someone charming, charismatic and sexy, who has so much in common with you. Oh, sometimes the story doesn’t quite add up, and you feel a little rushed, but this person is obviously head over heels in love with you! Calling all the time! Sending texts and emails! Already talking about forever!

Is it love—or predation? RED FLAGS OF LOVE FRAUD — 10 signs you’re dating a sociopath has the answers.

Three million to 12 million sociopaths live among us, and no, they aren’t all deranged serial killers. But they are social predators. They like company, and they really like sex, so they’re always on the hunt for a hookup.

RED FLAGS OF LOVE FRAUD explains:
    · The top 10 signs of sociopathic suitors (#1: charisma and charm)
    · Why anyone is vulnerable—especially powerful women
    · How sociopaths use love bombing to seduce their targets
    · Why there’s no such thing as “just sex”
    · Three steps to protect yourself from love fraud

Andersen learned about sociopaths the hard way—by marrying one. He took $227,000 from her, cheated with six women in two years and committed bigamy. Because of her experience, she launched Lovefraud.com, which teaches people how to recognize and recover from sociopaths. This book is based on her experience, and research conducted among her thousands of readers. It reveals, for the first time, the tactics social predators use to draw unsuspecting partners into romantic relationships, only to exploit them.

RED FLAGS OF LOVE FRAUD is a must-read for anyone who is looking for a partner—and anyone who is mystified by the partner they have.

“When the Carny Comes to Town” was issued in February 2012 as the third book in the Jolie Gentil cozy mystery series. I was honored that you chose to review the first book of the series (“Appraisal for Murder”) and believe that the review on LL Book Reviews is a reason it sold 1,400 copies in March.

In “When the Carny Comes to Town” Jolie cements friendships as she tries to find out what happened to her best bud (and later his mom), but she also begins to learn more about herself. At the end of the book, she is entering her first All-Anon meeting. All of this is presented with humor and endearing characters. As in the other books, Aunt Madge’s dogs and Jolie’s cat have small (but well integrated roles).

    Brief Summary
Though she never liked the idea of sitting on the plank above the dunk tank for the food pantry’s fundraiser at the carnival, Jolie never dreamed what Scoobie saw that day would leave him battling for his life. Scoobie’s ex-con mother shows up and there’s a murder to add to the mix. Soon Jolie is doing a lot more than appraising real estate, though even that is complicated by home burglars. Jolie grudgingly seeks help from her nemesis–reporter George Winters–and tries to stay a step ahead of a kidnapper and murderer so she can take charge of her world again. Can she keep her friends safe, and will Scoobie recover enough to plan another silly fundraiser?

Thank you for you continuing service to authors and their readers.

“…women are dying and Danny Harper’s life is in pieces…”

THIN ICE is the story of young journalist Danny Harper – and a serial killer targeting young women in a British city.

Danny Harper has a perfect life – a new home, a good career and the girl he loves is about to marry him. Then he wakes in hospital to find none of it’s true. Refusing to admit he’s imagined it all, Harper tries to regain his lost life.

But, while his claims are initially dismissed as delusion, he knows secrets that can’t be easily explained – including information about who’s killing young women in his city.

THIN ICE is the story of what happens when two parallel universes collide – one world where Danny Harper’s life is a success, the other where it’s a mess.

When Harper is involved in an accident his lives flip: the failure ends up in hospital in a coma, the success wakes in a world where all the important things in his life are missing.

Stuck in the ‘wrong’ life, Harper starts trying to deal with this new, alternative existence. But in the process he has to deal with something that casts a new perspective on his problem – a deranged killer with a fanatical obsession for the ‘sins of woman’.

In Danny Harper’s ‘real’ world, the killer has already been caught. But in this alternative world – partly due to a mistake by the ‘other’ Harper – the killings have so far gone undetected. And the latest victim is a complete innocent.

THIN ICE is currently only on Kindle but it’s being published by Engine House Press via Smashwords next month and will then be more widely available. Review copies available in various formats (.epub, .mobi etc) if wanted.

Here’s what one reader posted on the amazon.co.uk site:

“This was a very cleverly crafted book, absolutely gripping from start to finish. Full of colourful, some larger than life, characters who you came to know and love, and all brought to a fast paced, gripping climax which was satisfying but still managed to leave you wanting more.”

  24. Eileen Haavik McIntgire

Please consider reviewing my book, Shadow of the Rock, historical fiction about the Morocco-Florida connection. ISBN 978-0-9834049-0-3. It is in e-book and print editions, and I could submit it whichever way is preferred.

Shadow of the Rock weaves the journeys of two women, 200 years apart, into a story that connects Morocco with Florida and two of its pioneers. The author traveled throughout Florida, St. Thomas, Gibraltar and Morocco to research the story. Midwest Book Review calls it “a riveting story of time and humanity. Highly recommended.”

The book opens with Rachel Levy and her father Moses setting sail for America in 1781. Barbary pirates attack their ship and bring them to Morocco for sale. The loathsome vizier forces Moses into slavery as his assistant and compels Rachel to choose between him and the king’s harem. Without money or resources, Moses and Rachel must use their wits to find a way to freedom.

Rachel seeks her future, but Sara Miller seeks her past. When Sara’s sweet, apron-wearing, West Virginia grandmother Ruth is killed, Sara discovers Ruth’s secret past and sets off to find Ruth’s brother Samuel, long thought killed during World War II. The search takes Sara to Florida, then to the Virgin Islands, and finally to Gibraltar. There, in an ancient Jewish cemetery, she uncovers Ruth’s mystery and the link to their ancestor, Rachel Levy.

Sara’s travels follow the author’s search for the truth behind Rachel’s story, often cited in Florida history books. Rachel’s grandson, David Levy Yulee, fought for Florida’s statehood and became one of Florida’s first senators and the first Jewish senator in Congress.

Shadow of the Rock by Eileen Haavik McIntire is available in print and e-book editions. The book includes a bibliography and book group discussion questions. Other information is available at her website, http://www.ehmcintire.com.

  25. Cristina Deptula (author: Mitzi Penzes)

    LL Book Review:

I’m Cristina Deptula with New Year Publishing, a small, family-owned press, and we’ve
discovered a new and interesting author, Mitzi Penzes, who’s created a (chick/hen lit) novel, Perfectly Crazy, featuring an older middle-aged protagonist who unexpectedly discovers love and passion a second time around.

A medical doctor before launching her career, Penzes brings some of her real-life knowledge to the page while following her characters on a wild ride through California, Europe, marriage, business, high fashion, divorce, death, success, playfulness, and romance.

We’re offering you a free copy of the book (released last August) if you would like to write a review in your blog – preferably a PDF, although hard copies are available if
you prefer. Please reply and let us know if you would be interested, and we will get the book off to you!

You may learn more about Mitzi Penzes and her novel, and see the cover art, on her website and through Perfectly Crazy’s Facebook page.

“In the last ten days, I’ve resigned myself to three things: Your kid’ll break his arm the day after you lose your job; you should always look a gift horse in the mouth; and nothing, not even ridding the world of demons, is as straightforward as you’d think.”

Kelly McGinnis has spent her adult life trying to do the right thing, but as a newly down-sized mother of twins and the wife of a man living with Multiple Sclerosis, she also knows that trying isn’t always enough.

While interrupting a scene of police brutality, Kelly unwittingly releases a real, live demon. After she manages to kill the creature through gut instinct and blind luck, she is approached to join a secret group of demon hunters who reveal an underworld of monsters and magic.

Against her better judgment, Kelly accepts the lucrative, if bizarre, offer; but when she meets Umber, a compelling incubus with an unexpectedly human story, she learns that the truth is far stranger and more terrifying than she imagined.

    Hi,

I think you might really enjoy the work of Michael Sussman. His YA paranormal/ fantasy novel Crashing Eden debuts through Solstice Publishing within a few weeks, once the cover art is finalized.

Here is a brief summary of Crashing Eden:

For one boy and his friends, the path to Paradise comes at a cost—one they may not be prepared to pay.
When a biking accident leaves 17-year-old Joss Kazdan with the ability to hear things others can’t, reality as he knows it begins to unravel.
A world of legends exists beyond the ordinary life he’s always known, and he is transported to the same Paradise he’s studying in World Mythology. But the strange gets even stranger when his new friends build a device that delivers people through the gates of the Garden of Eden.
Now Samael, the Creator God, is furious. As Samael rains down his apocalyptic devastation on the ecstasy-seeking teens, Joss and his companions must find a way to appease Samael—or the world will be destroyed forever.

Forgotten Vilcabamba: Final Stronghold of the Incas

“This is the story of an escape that turned into a quest that became an obsession that has solved, I think, a very old puzzle. What began as a simple adventure soon took on a life of its own and became in time an Odyssey of learning and discovery. Those who think that the frontiers of exploration have all descended into the ocean depths or flown out beyond the rings of Saturn take heart and read on…”

A modern-day scientific adventure set against a fascinating historical backdrop, Forgotten Vilcabamba describes the author’s long but successful campaign to uncover the secrets of lost Vilcabamba, the once-powerful Incas’ mysterious redoubt in the jungles of the Upper Amazon.

Weaving together the region’s bloody history in the aftermath of the Spanish conquest and the saga of intrepid early efforts to unlock Vilcabamba’s secrets three centuries later, Vincent Lee’s masterpiece includes numerous maps and illustrations to bring the hidden ruins of the Incas’ long-forgotten final stronghold back to life.

    http://www.cruxpublishing.co.uk/books/forgotten.html

“Vincent Lee reveals the secrets and solves the mysteries of Manco Inca’s Vilcabamba in a series of splendid expeditions. His detective work and conclusions are totally convincing (and his) drawings constitute a treasure-house of new information.”
    John Hemming
Author of The Conquest of the Incas

“Forgotten Vilcabamba is destined to be read and re-read for as long as people are interested in the search for and discovery of lost cities from ancient civilizations. A book that not only captures the excitement of exploration but also tantalizes one with the idea that lost cities are still out there waiting to be found. A great and thrilling read.”
    Kim MacQuarrie
Author of The Last Days of the Incas

“In the category of boots-on-the-ground narratives about the Incas, the true classics can be counted on one hand. Vincent Lee’s Forgotten Vilcabamba might just be my favorite. No other book captures so well the history and magic of the once-impenetrable territory that lies just beyond Machu Picchu. With his architect’s eye and superhuman curiosity, Lee succeeds in conjuring back to life the stone masterpieces erected by some of history’s greatest engineers. In the process he manages to have one hell of an adventure.”
    Mark Adams
Author of Turn Right at Machu Picchu

“No ruin has ever got lost again once Vincent Lee had found it. He combines meticulously thorough exploration with a draughtsman’s eye, resulting both in superb plan maps of the Vilcabamba sites and a text that evokes the endless appeal of this rugged and rich landscape. Forgotten Vilcabamba has the great virtue too that the author always takes the Incas far more seriously than he takes himself; it is one of those rare books that combines both modesty and insight.”
    Hugh Thomson
    Author of The White Rock

  29. Richard Daybell

Voodoo Love Song by Richard Daybell is a humorous romantic adventure available in both print and ebook formats at amazon.com/author/richarddaybell.

Boy meets duck, boy loses duck, boy finds girl.

At Disney World, Paul is picked up by a five-foot duck named Huey. Duckness proves to be skin deep, however, for Huey the Duck is really Huey the Girl, an attractive young woman who leads Paul astray and to Key West, where during a sailing adventure, they are marooned on a tropical island. Idyllic, except for the pirates, pythons and panthers, voodoo, men who have passed through the earth twice, and things that go bump in the Caribbean night.

“Here we are, stuck on Gilligan’s Island — Chickenshit Crusoe and his faithless companion, Good Friday.”

“I was a Boy Scout for two weeks.”

“And to think I was worried. But you obviously know how to start a fire without matches, forage for food, and carve a comfortable existence out of the cruel jungle.”

“Well I did learn how to tie a square knot.”

“There you are. You little rascals are always prepared, aren’t you? And kind and reverent and true and really helpful. If we only had a little old lady, you could help her back and forth across the beach.”

Gerald Johnston, Write Way Wrong Way: “Rapier wit, utterly amazing dialogue, and some of the most engaging characters I’ve ever read. I fell in love with Huey.”

  30. Wyatt Shev

    To Whom It May Concern,

My name is Wyatt Shev. After a long slug along the more traditional avenues – without any success – I have retrieved the rights to my novel Suitcase Pimp from my agent. In an effort to increase my readership, I recently self-published on Amazon’s Kindle Store. I’m now contacting the web’s better known and trusted book reviewers and bloggers in a wide-eyed and blatantly naive attempt to garner some reviews and rustle up some much-needed publicity.

LL Book Review came up several times during my search, and after a quick yet satisfying perusal of your site, I would like to submit Suitcase Pimp for your consideration.
I have included Suitcase Pimp’s Kindle Store blurb below:

    It started out organically enough…

Serial malcontent Loren Niva and his impressionable young wife Anya make the move out to California, in search of their slice of the American Dream. Starry-eyed victims of blind faith and misplaced trust, it isn’t long until the city of Los Angeles conspires to devour them whole.

Sick of navigating dire financial straits, open-minded Anya takes work as a ‘girl-girl’ performer in the San Fernando Valley’s thriving adult entertainment industry. Loren assumes the role of a ‘suitcase pimp’ – a slur reserved for boyfriends and husbands of porn starlets – and takes to his sordid new life with voracious relish.

What follows is a boozy, merrily depraved descent into unbridled excess, spanning locales both seedy and stately throughout Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Through whiskey-bleared eyes, Loren eagerly explores his debauched new world. But as Anya’s dubious star continues to rise, Loren’s torrid, increasingly perverse adventures threaten to tear their already flimsy union asunder.

At turns outrageous and profane, Suitcase Pimp tackles the various oily idiosyncrasies of ‘the Industry’, shining a grubby little spotlight on the colorful, low-dwelling characters that comprise it. It is a brutish testament to all-American excess – and a lament for the slow disintegration and demise of an all-American marriage.

    A little about me…

My first novel, Boom Town, was published in Australia in 2003, when I was twenty-one years old. In 2007 I relocated from Australia to the quaint, sleepy town of Los Angeles, California, with my young American wife. While there, I concentrated on building a career as a screenwriter. Presently, one of my completed screenplays is being repped by Creative Artists Agency, and VH1 has signed on to produce a pilot for a ‘reality sitcom’ which I co-created. Suitcase Pimp is a (semi) fictionalized account of the events that led my now-ex wife into the maw of the San Fernando Valley’s porn industry – and the subsequent termination of my short marriage.

Please let me know if you’d be interested in reviewing my sordid little tale. I look forward to your reply.

    Yours most sincerely,

    Wyatt Shev

  31. Greg Caldwell

For fans of a good adventure/action science fiction book,
My name is Greg Caldwell. I wrote and published the book “Blood Lotto”, a story based on the near future when the population on earth has doubled. I would like to have this book reviewed. I have received great feedback, but would rely greatly upon your review of my book. This story cultivates the reality of our very near future. The accuracy of information is based on real population numbers projected forward. I feel this story has all the elements of romance, adventure, action, and partial reality that will blow the mind of the reader. I can honestly see this as a great movie someday.

The thesis of the story is as follows:
The United Nations, now a global government, has exhausted its ability to reverse this drastic population explosion. The U.N. residing president provides a chilling plan to control population growth–an execution lottery to annihilate people from selected areas around the globe. Despite the extreme public outrage of this plan, the government implements it.

The book is published through Iuniverse Publishing and distributed through Amazon.

    Author Web Site: http://the-active-voice.com

Nolander is a contemporary/urban fantasy of about 99,000 words. It’s the first book in a projected series.

The book’s 23-year-old female protagonist, Beth, narrates. She’s a small-town girl from northern Wisconsin who’s been diagnosed with panic disorder. Her symptoms have prevented her from going to college or moving to a more populous area. They’ve also made her dating life hell.

As the novel begins, Beth is struggling to make a good life for herself despite the limitations imposed by her illness. She’s recently taken up photography as a hobby — the old-fashioned kind, with actual film. In the novel’s opening chapters, she takes several pictures that show things she didn’t see with her own eyes and can’t really explain. In one case, she seems to have captured the image of something inhuman.

Soon Beth is contacted by a dangerous group of people responsible for policing an unseen world of creatures that have abilities humans lack. As she becomes more involved with this organization, she realizes that her future is beginning to look very different from the frustrating but safe small-town life she’d planned.

“The Happy Housewife” was recently released as an eBook. I wanted to request a review from you. Please find the description below:

Dateline: March 3, 2011, Woodinville, Washington. “Built green? Nope black! ELF.” The mocking sign was left at the sight of an eco-terrorist attack on ‘green’ multi-million dollar homes which were burnt to the ground. While the incident drew headlines from local papers, it barely made the national news. No arrests have been made.

Dateline: Same day, Fairfax, Virginia. Samantha Sherman, a former Coast Guard helicopter pilot turned stay at home Mom, tries to decide between Tide 2X Ultra with Dawn Stain Scrubbers and her old standby, Tide with Bleach Alternative. She finally determines that it truly makes no difference and sighs. Little does she know that in a few short weeks her happy, but not wildly exciting life will be turned upside down by the threat of eco-terrorism, the Weather Underground, and murder.

“The Happy Housewife” is a 200 page suburban murder mystery which involves one ordinary woman, Samantha, who finds herself drawn into a criminal investigation. In the process of solving two murders, she also struggles to overcome a mistake from her past career which resulted in her current inability to make decisions and assert herself.

    Author: D.M. Andrews

    Genre: Humour / Parody

‘It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a man in possession of a wife, must be in want of a good fortune.’

There is much excitement in Longlawn when two men with tall hats enter the district. Mothers buy new dresses for their daughters, fathers polish up on their fencing skills, and Mr Bayonet tackles the perilous journey through the stinging nettles to call upon the new occupants of Nettlefield Park.

The ditsy Jane Bayonet soon falls for Mr Blingley with all his gold jewellery, but her sister, the ever-prodigious Lizzy, very much dislikes Mr Blingley’s friend, Mr Dicey, whose pied coat and tall hat strike fear into the local populace.

This is a story of excessive fashion, high heels, large wardrobes, tall hats – oh, and romance!

This book is an abridged light parody of Jane Austen’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’, and runs to approximately 40,000 words.

Many spoofs take things a bit too far, and so, as a big fan of Austen, I’ve been eager to receive feedback on this parody.

My novel, Tell A Thousand Lies, was shortlisted for the 2012 Tibor Jones South Asia prize. In the month is has been out, it has garnered great reviews (4 & 5 star) from book bloggers.

My synopsis is pasted below. Should you wish to review it, I’d be happy to generate an ebook in the format of your choosing.

    Thank you for your consideration.

    Best,
    Rasana

    Synopsis:
In a land where skin colour can determine one’s destiny, fraternal twins PULLAMMA and LATA are about to embark on a journey that will tear their lives apart.

Dark skinned Pullamma dreams of being a wife. With three girls in her family, the sixteen year old is aware there isn’t enough dowry to secure suitable husbands for them all. But a girl can hope. She’s well versed in cooking, pickle making, cow washing — you name it. She’s also obliged her old-fashioned grandmother by not doing well in school.

Fair skinned and pretty, her twin sister Lata would rather study medicine than get married. Unable to grasp the depth of Lata’s desire, the twins’ Grandmother formalizes a wedding alliance for the girl. Distraught, Lata rebels, with devastating consequences.

As Pullamma helps ready the house for her older sister Malli’s bride viewing, she prays for a positive outcome to the event. What happens next is so inconceivable that it will shape Pullamma’s future in ways she couldn’t have foreseen.

TELL A THOUSAND LIES is a sometimes wry, sometimes sad, but ultimately realistic look at how superstition and the colour of a girl’s skin rules India’s hinterlands.

As she drank in the spirit of the wilderness of Colorado, the Great Plains of Nebraska and the rolling dells of Wisconsin, Cherilyn SunRidge learned how simplicity can bring the greatest peace and joy to one’s life. And she knew she needed to share this insight.

“We need to give ourselves permission to receive a delightful sense of healing through a greater awareness of the world around and within us,” SunRidge says. “My book, ‘Nothing Is As It Was,’ helps people give themselves that permission.”

‘Nothing Is As It Was’ offers 33 poems that, when combined with the author’s original, bold artwork, becomes a comfortable daily companion for anyone seeking a way to stop for just a moment each day and appreciate the world’s beauty.

The book is for sale online at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Can I please send you a copy?

    Thanks!

I’d very much like to have my just-released debut novel, Sea of Crises, reviewed by LL Book Review. Published by Penfield Publications (my own imprint), it is available on Amazon in both ebook and paperback format. Here is a link:

    http://www.amazon.com/Sea-of-Crises-ebook/dp/B007QYPU8U/ref=tmm_kin_title_0?ie=UTF8&m=AG56TWVU5XWC2&qid=1335654549&sr=1-1

It’s a contemporary thriller that blows the lid off a decades-old mystery: What really happened to the crew of Apollo 18, the last of America’s manned lunar missions and one that ended in tragedy when the heat shield on the command capsule failed during re-entry, leaving the three dead astronauts inside burned beyond recognition? With them died any chance of learning the meaning of Commander Bob Cartwright’s last enigmatic statement, “That shouldn’t be here,” uttered just before all communication was lost during the astronauts’ first moon walk, or of discovering what took place during three blacked out days in the Mare Crisium, the Sea of Crises. Thirty-six years later, however, Cartwright’s sons make a shocking discovery: The capsule that came down in the Pacific Ocean with three charred remains was not their father’s capsule. And the body they buried all those years before was not their father.

What they’ve uncovered puts the three brothers on the run, chased by a ruthless group who will stop at nothing to preserve the secret behind the fate of the Apollo 18 astronauts. The brothers will need to set aside past differences and pool their talents if they are to stay alive and unravel the mystery behind what really happened in the Sea of Crises.

Thank you for the wonderful service you provide.

I am an independent publisher/author. My first novel is titled “Because of the Moon”.
It is a very funny teen novel. I hope you will find the time to review it.

    Synopses…
“Obedience is for dogs,” spouts Jay; an out of control thirteen year old. Arrested for being at a chop shop, Jay can either go to juvenile detention or move to the poor Indian reservation his mother shunned fourteen years ago where his estranged grandfather will oversee Jay’s penance. Jay’s latest prank,’rat day’ and his unique way of dealing with a bully make “Because of the Moon” a book you won’t soon forget.

The reader will be taken on a journey with a boy who rules his own world. Freedom to roam the city, staying out late, tagging, and pulling pranks at school. Jay loves his life until he gets caught.
Not understanding that he even had First Nations blood in him has come as a shock. Learning he has a Grampa in a remote village is even more shocking. Having to go live with him for six months is devastating. Moving to a new school and a new town is not how Jay envisioned spending his summer. His grampa is a task master and has Jay working evenings and weekends. The time they spend together is not all drudgery as Jay learns about his First Nations heritage and even how to carve a totem pole.

Being the new kid in town draws attention from the whole village. Jay gets to know and appreciate the quirky villagers such as the cat lady who loves all her cats – living and dead – and who won’t stop making Bannock, the “witch” doctor, the roving band of dogs and the artist turned alcoholic, Johnny Walker. If Jay can survive the bully, the villagers may also learn to appreciate him, too.

I have written several books over the years which are either women’s health or business books. I have now completed my first novel as well and it has been published through Lulu, as my other books are. I’d very much appreciate a review of my work and would be happy to help in the promotion of the review as well. The novel has the title ‘Woman on the Edge of Reality’. It is a contemporary romance novel which is a very gentle read and would appeal to women who are over the age of 40ish.

    Summary

It tells the story of Rosemary who visits Cornwall for just one week in September. During the course of the week she not only discovers a love of picking blackberries but also revisits the reality that is her life and the role she has had in how it has worked out. In the process the Rosie that has always lain within emerges and she becomes whole once more.

  49. Eric Timar

Tales from the Boiler Room, by Eric Timar, is a collection of eight short stories, mostly with some humor to them and mostly with a paranormal element. (Certified vampire- and werewolf-free, however.)

Did aliens help the ancient Mayans build their pyramids — or were the aliens too intoxicated from hot chocolate to be of much help?

    Also:

-An immigrant from the Caribbean complains about the cold from beyond the grave
-A jaded drug-sniffing dog advocates legalization (and narrates)
-A young man wishes for an angel, since his girlfriend has one already

Why should you read this? I like to think of this collection as perfect subway reading or bus reading. Also, it gives a voice to some people who often struggle to be heard, such as immigrants and Mayan malcontents.

Excerpt: Eunice Rigby is about to toast the memory of her alcoholic uncle:

She shook her head. “It’s a little—a little perverse, you know, honoring Uncle Cornelius with liquor. It’s like having a bonfire to mark the Hindenburg crash.”

Available for Kindle and in paperback (by CreateSpace).
