In the spirit of making changes, there is one more change that we would like to introuduce to the LL Book Review – Pick Me! Statuses. Since we receive questions on a fairly regular basis asking for the status of whether or not a book will be reviewed, we will now add on the status of the submitted works. The statuses will be:

    1. Pending Consideration – This simply means that not all reviewers have had a chance to go through the process of determining whether they would like the book to consider for review.
    2. Under Consideration – A reviewer has selected the book to take a more in depth look at the book, with the expectation of reviewing the selection. Note: This does not mean the book will definitely be reviewed, but that based on the preview, we felt a spark of interest and wanted to read more.
    3. Being Read
    4. – Self-explanatory.

    5. Review Scheduled – The book has been reviewed and is awaiting a scheduled date to post.

The below is a status update for those books which have had their Pick Me! entries removed while under the old format – the list should give everyone an understanding as to why it sometimes takes awhile for your book to be read and reviewed. The entries will be removed from the list once the review goes live or a declined notification is sent.

Hi Shannon, It’s been a while since you reviewed my book (Abandoned: review 37) and I would like to thank you again for that. I don’t know if you sometimes revisit authors, but if you do, I would love for you to review “Eye of the Witch”. Although it is the second book in an ongoing paranormal detective mystery series that I am writing, (book 5 is almost complete) it is, like the others, a fine stand alone and the real “jumping off point” for the series. I received a wonderful boost in sales after your review of “Abandoned”, and I am hoping you can help me kick start the success of this series. As with the last book, I am offering “Eye of the Witch” as a free download to anyone interested, either from my web site or from Lulu. Anyway, hope you can look at it. Oh, and by the way, you will be happy to know that the book is only about 400 pages at 4.25 x 6.89
    Cover blurb:
Back in the game, are Detectives Tony Marcella and Carlos Rodriquez with new comer, Detective Dominic Spinelli. Together they race against time to solve a mystery involving a string of suicides that suggest a pattern of something more sinister. It’s not enough that the clues in the deaths of three women seem to indicate who the next victim might be, but because of the ties that bind their pasts, every potential victim is also a potential suspect. “Eye of the Witch” available in paperback and PDF download.

    Pick me, please!

The title of my book is Discovering Wounded Justice: Cruel Menace
ISBN: 978-0-9804548-0-2 (hardcover); 978-0-9804548-1-9 (paperback); 978-0-9804548-2-6 (eBook, multiformat)

    Synopsis:

Alyssa Giordano, a first generation American, never thought being a woman in this day and age would be a disadvantage… until she met her first boss. Her grandmothers, one Irish, the other Italian, fought so hard to be seen by other women as their husbands’ equals. But Alyssa’s grandfathers, and her father, knew who really ran things.
Barely a year into her career, the young lawyer couldn’t believe that Duncan Kennedy would accuse her of a double cross and sack her after she’d rebuffed his advances. Nor could she believe that his partner, Lydia Price, refused to support her. As she leaves behind her first job in the only career which she’d ever wanted, Alyssa, pride wounded, loses faith in the one thing she’d grown up believing in: justice.

After struggling to get her career (and her life) back in order, Giordano finally hits the big time and finds that roles are reversed. Kennedy is labeled a swindler and a leading journalist, a woman no less, holds his fate in her hands. But as he vanishes in a cloud of lies and creditors before he can be brought to justice, Giordano’s faith in it, justice, freefalls again.

Later uncovering reports of Kennedy’s untimely death, Alyssa’s faith in justice returns and she begins to believe she is rid of the cruel menace who almost destroyed her. Until the day he walks back into her life to seemingly ask for her help in restoring his reputation… and tries to take her life…

The “follow-on” and “prequel” novels are currently under development. The eBook version is available in multiple formats, including a format for reading on Kindle.

  8. Robert Covelli

    Hi:

I published a book, Black Sheep, with Lulu.com. It’s posted on the website I noted above, lunacourt.net.

    This is a synopsis:

Black Sheep follows a change of power in the Rust Belt city of Buffalo NY.
Visionaries start a manufacturing venture, building hybrid cars, precisely
when the Democratic Party nominates a progressive as its candidate for
mayor. The local crime family takes a spirited interest in new money in
town, at the very moment that a younger crew of criminals decides to
    unseat that particularly established family.

My hero is the son of the first member of that family to abandon the life
of crime. My hero’s dad foresaw how much corporations would change
America and pursued economics at the university (now SUNY Buffalo) in the
60s. There he met my hero’s mom, a black woman, social psychologist and
comrade in the struggles of that wild hour. As a result, my hero
understands the general contours of what’s happening in Buffalo in the
present; and he seeks to discover the specifics, somehow curb what’s bad
and support and profit from what’s good. It happens that the younger crew
of criminals is fresh out of prison, the products of economic policies of
the 80s that left cities like Buffalo forsaken and jobless, a development
that hardly shocks my hero. Indeed, my hero reads quite a bit and listens
    to a lot of Bach.

    Thank you and warmest regards.

You were so kind last year when you reviewed Banshee Angel of Judgement. Thank you. I now have a new book called Bublos, which I would love for you to review or another memeber of your staff. Here is the blurb on the back of the book:

In the book of Revelation it mentions a scroll with seven seals. What if this scroll was hidden on earth? When an old man dies in Liverpool his flat is emptied by Joe and his friends and a strange looking book comes into Joe’s keeping. Soon he finds what trouble comes with the book when he watches his friend Toby being tortured then killed before his eyes. A man he recently met rescues him from possibly the same fate. Soon he finds out the man that saved him is more than just a man and that those that are after him aren’t what they appear to be. Demons and Angels don’t really exist yet Joe now knows they do and the book mustn’t fall to the wrong side or it may spell the end of everything.

Please consider the following book for review:

    The Bracelet
    By Todd W. Cheney

Mike Alex, a small-town mechanic, finds a bracelet that can give him a wish once a day.

    An excerpt:

“Emptiness took him. He’d used the bracelet again, and anything could happen. But it was too much for him, and too much for any man or woman to resist. A thing like the bracelet shouldn’t be allowed to exist under the sight of God, but Mike now had to face the fact that it did. He could do anything with it. Elation filled the hole inside him. If God had allowed the bracelet to exist, it must be a part of his design. Unless, of course, he had somehow gone above all that, above God. Why worry about religious questions if the bracelet could give him any kind of power he wanted? Screw God, he could be him, if he wished it.

Mike Alex laughed at himself, smiled in the faint light, and caught the glint of his eyes in the mirror. In the next room, Rhonda turned over, mumbling to herself. To cover his actions, even though he didn’t need to, Mike Alex flushed the toilet, and left the bathroom. He slept soundly that night.”
Todd Cheney grew up in Brookfield, Wisconsin, a suburb of Milwaukee, and has lived in the southeastern Wisconsin area all his life.

Cheney wrote his first novel, The Seventh Circle, in the year 2000. He has gone on to complete The Seventh Circle fantasy series consisting of four books: The Seventh Circle, The Rhythm of Nature, Emperors of Darkness and The Soulstone. He is also the author of a science fiction novel titled The Risen.”

    Besserwisser: A Novel
    Humor, satire, literary

    Amazon Kindle: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002NU5LCW
    Multi-format ebook: http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/3697

It’s 1990, the Berlin Wall’s fallen, and American slacker Gordy Ford arrives in Munich with barely a roof over his head. Hoping to impress Jane, a hip older German, Gordy carries on a half-baked charade that he’s a top Fulbright scholar. Soon Gordy and his long-lost expat pal Tad stumble onto a historical discovery that seems to invoke the wrath of a shady Neo-Nazi pretender, Hugo, not to mention the recently liberated Russian mafia. But what are they all really after? Each carry secrets and will have to come clean — even when the truth wreaks havoc on guarded love and brittle dreams.

Besserwisser: A Novel (German for “know-it-all wannabes”) offers dark humor, a rowdy plot, and imposters exposed despite their best efforts. There’s farce, satire, and a few lessons learned. It also comes from the heart, since I once was (really was) a Fulbright Research Fellow in Munich.

This book is a very light hearted read about life lessons learned from a father’s quotes, and examples. It is my hope that you get out of this book some understanding of my memories, laugh a little bit, and realize that it is always important to understand the gravity of moments when they happen. There are no guarantees in life, enjoy life while it is happening.

    “Shadowrealm: Tales of the Supernatural”
    L. A. Hudson
    ISBN-13: 978-0615250236

It was a curse born of tragedy that lingered long after its enemies were destroyed!

In the center of a hundred-fifty-year-old cemetery, a family mausoleum bares the name Ravenhurst. It houses the last remains of that now extinct line within its dark and musty walls. It houses something else as well, a prisoner who has served over a century on a sentence of eternity.

Young Darius Sneed had always been a sucker for peer pressure which mingled with his intense need to be part of the ‘in’ crowd. So when he manages to get ‘in’ with a neighborhood group of thugs he’s eager to do whatever it takes to be initiated.

It’s late October, a Saturday night, and Halloween what could possibly be more appropriate to the venue than a midnight visit to a cemetery?

“The Curse of Ravenhurst,” one of seven stories from “Shadowrealm: Tales of the Supernatural.”

  14. MARC ALYN

This self help book is designed to teach practical, real life lessons about the meaning of life observed by the author during his brief recovery at a psychiatric hospital in New York. Following medical recovery the author finds himself in a psychiatric hospital which changed his perspective on what really matters in life. This is a truly inspirational, motivational work. Richard R. Blake, writing for Reader Views Magazine, lauded the work as “worthy of wide distribution.” Blake went on to praise the work as “articulate, candid, and relevant”. I think the work is worthy of review because the message is important and the work has a broad spectrum of interest.

“Who Stole Nan’s Knickers?” is my second effort, which is a collection of short, mostly humorous anecdotes gleaned from the musty, dusty depths of my memory banks. They are all mainly true, with the possible execption of one, which may have a grain of truth buried in it somewhere. Which one do you think it is?

Do have a look. It’s only a short tome, so will not take up too much of your valuable time.

And did someone really steal my grandmother’s knickers?

    Brief Overview:
This story has several themes and concurrent threads. It was born out of my curiosity about the phenomenon of “coincidences”, which led to my greater undersatnding of the term “synchronicity.” As if by divine influence, once I became more aware of what the notion of synchronicity meant to many, I began to experience “Visions” during waking hours… and each of them became reality shortly thereafter.

The story involves the spiritual awakening of a teenage girl named Veronica, whose nickname is “Violet.” She and her father, Mateo, visit the San Diego Zoo as a birthday request shortly after she turns 15. A mysterious, miraculous peacock feather lures Violet to the Zoo, and at the same time – it attracts another visitor on the same day. Unfortunately for all the visitors on that day (December 27th), a major earthquake dramatically transforms the landscape and puts them in peril. The 14 stranded survivors are initially separated by the mangled geographic forms, but they eventually find one another and band together despite their differences. Violet’s innate tendencies and special sensibilities come to the forefront as time wears on. There are many true synchronicities woven into the story, some of which were honestly not planned in advance – they revealed themselves to me during the writing process.

The story involves some metaphysical themes, such as spiritual healing, remote viewing, and telepathic communication. I do not consider it anything but factual in that regard, however. This is not a “gimmick”, but rather a validation of such practices as real and “good.” The story depicts humanity as being on the verge of a transition of epic proportions, and the evolution is kick-started by the natural disasters depicted. The people in this microcosm act as catalysts that have much farther-reaching impact than any of them realize. At the core, this is also the story of the relationship between a devoted father and his enlightened, highly-evolved daughter – who is just on the verge of understanding her true destiny.

    WHY PICK MY BOOK?
I feel I have done a thorough job of building much more than a simple story. Beyond it being a compelling read, there are some amazing tie-ins with actual events I experienced. Also, there are some hidden “Easter Eggs” for sharp-minded readers to try to spot; along the lines of synchronicities. The ensemble cast is very eclectic, colorful and compelling. In my opinion, this story could be described as “a spiritual/thinking person’s 2012.” While it does foretell of a massive natural disaster in the near future (although the year is intentionally left out of the story), it has a hopeful message that will appeal to all ages. I’m confident any age or gender could truly love this book, but I had 18-30 year-olds in mind when I wrote it. Many inspirations helped shape my personal philosophy, which is reflected in the story. I think it is an exceptionally timely fictional work that may provide a sense of inspiration to those who read it with an open mind.

    Title: Buttermilk Moon
    Genre: Historical Fiction

    Dear Sirs,
I am presenting my novel, BUTTERMILK MOON, for review. It is complete at 88,000 words and available for preview at Smashwords, Barnes & Noble and Authonomy.

In 1944, a fifteen-year-old Texas boy fakes his identity and runs away to Europe, seeking his father who’s lost in the world war.

At the height of the second world war, George Cooper’s father is captured by the Wehrmacht. After a devastating storm, George leaves behind a mother, grandmother and girlfriend on their Texas farm and joins the Army to search for his missing father in Europe. With no training and borrowed dog tags, he finds himself in a place both foreign and frightening. George finds his way to Germany with help from a Belgian boy and a secret German book, wrecking a plane and freeing a trainload of Jewish prisoners along the way.

Back home his mother struggles to hold the family together. An eccentric aunt and boozing uncle test her patience. A grandmother grieving her dead husband comforts Sarabelle, George’s girlfriend, who has come to live with the Coopers after the storm and the loss of her family.

Set during the greatest struggle of the twentieth century, Buttermilk Moon is a distillation of what it means to be an American—a mythical connection to the land and family and mystic communion with past generations. George’s quest evokes the human will to survive, the human capacity for suffering and the perseverance—at any cost—to be near those we love.

Hello. I am a long-time Lulu user and forum power poster, and hope that I have learned the lessons in preparing my book as professionally as possible while helping many other Lulu users. My latest novel is a humorous take on the world we live in and what could go wrong with it, and is available in a digest edition at Lulu for just $5.95, and a trade paperback size on Amazon via CreateSpace priced at $7.95.

The book is “Not Fit For Human Consumption: A Comedic Farce.” Here’s the direct Lulu link: http://www.lulu.com/content/7812982, and the blurb text:

A tale not to be taken too seriously, with cockroaches, genetically enhanced rats, explosions, hedgehog conspiracy theorists, military coups, adolescent bomb shelter romance and cosmic entities bent on annihilation. The novel contains suggestive language (the PG-rated variety), and those seeking literature are best served by looking elsewhere. However, if you are in the mood for a farcical comedy step right in, and meet:

    Arax the Annihilator, an entity bent on destroying the earth;
    Henry Stewart, member of the Hedgehog Surveillance Network;
    Loretta the rabbit, who just wants to hop free in a meadow;
    Omar Sharteen, who wants to bomb his own Parliament building so the US will build a new one;
    Peter the Cockroach, a prophet who sees cockroaches as the final survivors;
and a host of others, including but not limited to strippers, teachers, t-shirt vendors, moths, prime ministers and cats.

The author regrets immensely not having any zombies in this book. Or monkeys. Or zombie monkeys.

Thanks for considering the book for review.

Seeing as how Dan Marvin enjoyed “Life’s A Gas”, it’s possible he’ll also enjoy this book, which is also influenced a fair bit by Douglas Adams…albeit the books a bit more about time than it is about space. Here’s the windup, and the pitch:

Time travel novels are always fairly clear about one point, which is this: the fabric of space-time is not a thing to be trifled with. People can’t change what’s supposed to happen in history. When people attempt to change history, that’s always when all hell breaks loose. Indeed, if people don’t take care to protect the sanctity of the timeline, the whole universe could collapse into nothingness.

That’s one theory, anyway. But it’s not the premise of my book Time Tourists, a book in the Douglas Adams tradition of humourous science fiction and in the Harry Turtledove tradition of plausible alternative history. My book is based on a different premise. What would happen if people could go back in time and mess with everything – with no consequences?

When a 23rd Century grad student, Regina Karsen, discovers that’s pretty much exactly what people could do, she decides to bypass the stuffy old ethics board at her university and go ahead and invent time travel (rather than finish her boring old metallurgy thesis). Since she figures telling people what she’s doing will only encourage them to try and stop her, she only shares her secret with her friend Kai Baraka, a history student. Despite initial misgivings (mostly about time travel being illegal and all), Kai comes to realise that a student of history can benefit from seeing it close up rather than reading about it in a book. So Kai signs on to go gallivanting for a few years around the length and breadth of the space-time continuum with Reg, living off the proceeds of their foreknowledge of outcomes of stock market values or sporting events. After a fair bit of chronological meandering, the two cross paths with Thom Rosenberg, who will be an existentialist novelist at some point in the future, though at present he is a twentysomething slacker bartender in 1995 New Orleans. He hasn’t yet written a word (though Kai is a devoted fan and has read every word he hasn’t written). Thom joins the two in their barrel roll through time and space, along with his best friend Christine Sheridan, a neurotic Catholic school girl from Iowa whose lack of self-confidence is the only thing masking her ultimate destiny to become Acid Rock Queen of the Sixties.

Confused? It would be surprising if you weren’t. In fact, that’s the general idea. The fun thing about this quirky and off-beat book is that there’s more where this came from. After a dizzying and nonlinear jaunt through numerous epochs, the reader may become a bit disoriented. (But it’s a good kind of disoriented.)

I would like a review of my newest book Wishful Thinking.

Ballerina Maevis Etherwood came home one night to find her husband in bed with a young starlet…
What happened afterwards remains a mystery, even to Maevis herself.

The next day her sisters came in to find Maevis unconscious on the floor in the hallway. The husband and his mistress lay in bed dead. Debris was scattered across the room.

The two investigators working on the case are baffled by the lack of any real evidence.
But what the two men do not realize is that Maevis is a faerie, who could have cast a wish-spell that killed the two victims…even inadvertently.

Could it be that hell hath no fury like a faerie scorned?
Or is it just a case of wishful thinking?

Armistice Day is here and the Krendorian Empire needs assistance with security at the ceremony. With the success of the Intervention War, Earth is to be welcomed into the Empire and will reap the benefits of citizenship.

But not everyone wants Earth to join the Empire.

After getting a cracker of a review for ‘Elysian Fields’, my only disappointment was getting slated for a weak ending to the story. That’s because it wasn’t really the end – just the gap between parts one and two!

THIS is the whole thing, and I’d love to see what either Dan or one of the other review team thinks of the real ending!

    http://www.lulu.com/content/paperback-book/alter-inferno/8180720

    And the pitch…

“Life ain’t cheap – no. Life is a rare and fragile thing. DEATH is cheap. One whisper, and a world burns…”
    Now it’s our turn.
From the ragged nebular veils of Damaun to the grinding ice of Gagraal Tho, the servants of the Praetor march into the grinder of war. Living voidships scour worlds with fire, holding back the Great Exterminator, She-In-Glory.

Meanwhile, Kaito Kayzi’s life is getting complicated. Headhunted by the hacker-zealots of the Ashishim, under the thumb of a corrupt gutter cop, and best friends with a Subcity adrenochrome ‘pharmer’, he’s twenty-five pushing fifty.
But the tension isn’t just inside his wetwired head…

The Last City is tearing itself apart. From the cloisters of the Kheptarchy, dripping with noble blood, to the sunless warrens of the Reclaimed Territories revolution taints the air. Kronos is failing – a great A.I. tyrant brought down by corrosion and betrayal. And in the machine’s necropolis heart lies a power so great that it can undo the scars of a nuclear holocaust…

Kaito just has to survive the night. But with the Technicians of the Multiplicity loose on Earth, that might be a very big ask. Because when the Praetor’s agents decide that a power is too great for human hands to grasp, that means trouble.
And when one of those inscrutable beings goes rogue… that means WAR.”

‘Alter Inferno’ comprises ‘Elysian Fields’ (which you’ve already reviewed) and ‘Chains of Tartarus’ (which you haven’t)… all streamlined and polished for a faster-paced read.
I’d love to have this definitive edition reviewed with the same verve and enthusiasm you gave to part one!

    Thanks for your consideration!

  27. Iolanthe Woulff

My name is Iolanthe (”Lannie”) Woulff. My debut novel, titled SHE’S MY DAD, was published this past November by Outskirts Press, and I’m writing to submit it for your review consideration.

SHE’S MY DAD is the suspenseful tale of a transsexual woman who is forced to overcome unforeseen coincidences and prejudices in order to prove to herself and others the power of love and the redemptive triumph of good over evil. In addition to providing what I hope is an entertaining story, I’ve draw upon my own gender transition to convey through the character of Nickie Farrell a more fully-formed view of the transgendered experience. I’d be very interested in your professional opinion as to how well (or not) I succeeded.

The novel is available on Amazon in hardcover, trade paperback, and Kindle formats. More information (bio, photos, reviews) is available at these links:

Hello, T.R. Braxton here. My book Dirty Hands has been published through Createspace and also available as a multi-format ebook through Smashwords. It is a fast paced, intense, and suspenseful crime thriller.

    Here is a synopsis/pitch:

In this fast paced crime thriller,Terrell Hawkins, his closest cousin, and his best friend set out to have a good time on a Saturday night. Alcohol, marijuana, and immodest girls who like to partake in both are part of that pursuit. They all expect to be hung over the next day, but they do not expect the tragic accident that will unravel their lives that very night. Nor do they expect their horrible response to embroil them in a struggle to avoid the authorities while growing increasingly distrusting of each other. Terrell and the others quickly learn that dirty hands can lead to desperate acts and that the worst of circumstances can cause even the best of friends to become enemies.

  30. Stephen T. Gerdel

My book, Oak Mountain (ISBN #978-1-4252-7699-0), was originally self published through Trafford Publishing in paperback and is now available for Kindle. Both editions are listed on Amazon.com and Trafford’s website bookstore.

The story opens in St. Louis with the assassination of the President of the United States. The assassin simply walked away, drove to the airport and escaped. Special Agent Mike Trapper, a Secret Service agent and team leader for presidential security, follow his trail and connections across the country and around the globe.

It is soon discovered the plot is broad and planned over many decades. Mike and a team of specialists in Washington discover a network of “sleepers” who hold many positions in the government, and the chase is on to find where they will strike next.

Mike is hounded by the reason and objective of the attack. After three tours in Iraq, he knows the cost of failure and the price of personal injury. His heroism and leadership place him in a position requiring secrecy and determination as the plot expands to envelope the nation.

But the tension increases when he discovers his family is in the cross-hairs of the next attack. The evil he pursues seeks to turn against him and strike at his very heart, threatening his wife Elli, and their four children.

The compelling story in Oak Mountain is captivating. It is the first novel of the Oak Mountain trilogy and launches the reader into a spellbinding journey. The technology used in the story is contemporary, exciting, and real. The events portrayed could happen on the evening news any day, any time.

Join Special Agent Mike Trapper as he pursues those who would destroy a nation. Discover their targets and see how hard work, keen intuition and the high-tech tools of tomorrow save the day.

Please consider No Greater Sacrifice for review:

    http://www.amazon.com/No-Greater-Sacrifice-John-Stipa/dp/1449543502

When terminally-ill archaeologist Renée d’Arcadia is summoned to France to take part in the reading of a will, she is plunged into a maelstrom of deceit and destruction to solve a 100-year-old mystery originating from a sinister church where nothing is as it seems. Renée joins forces with David Arturo, an ex-helicopter pilot with a troubled past, to interpret clues cleverly hidden in tombstones and classic works of literature to find artifacts scattered across Europe. Racing against time, Renée and David must overcome their inner demons to outmaneuver a network of evil bent on destroying them. What they find in each other just might provide answers to some of mankind’s oldest myths.

No Greater Sacrifice is available through Amazon, Barnes&Noble, CreateSpace and Lulu with Lulu providing the best preview function:

    http://www.lulu.com/content/paperback-book/no-greater-sacrifice/7796894

No Greater Sacrifice is an Indiana Jones-type adventure/thriller that sucks the reader into tunnels and secret chambers. But it is also a story of faith and love between a man and a woman thrown into an impossible situation. Both Renee and David have “issues” that require taking emotional risks if they are to survive. The journey they endure reaching the finale is as important as the climax itself.

    Thank you for your consideration.
