Best of luck with your new review blog. I’ve appreciated the work of Floyd Orr in reviewing books published by iUniverse. Having seen some nice stuff coming out of Lulu, I thought it would be great to one day see a site spring up to honor the best of those authors.
I’ll look forward to some interesting reviews.
Malcolm
I do not have a working knowledge of blogging and I do not have any experience with it, but I do understand the importance of honest and complete reviews, especially to the unknown author.
This is a service that can make or break a writer. It can be that ‘push’ the countless talented unknowns who think about publishing need, the ‘kick in the butt’-so to speak-that gives them the courage to take one more step forward and actually “do it.” Also, know this, I appreciate and feel very fortunate-that you, Shannon Yarbrough, took the time…made the effort to review my book.
It has been my reward and although it is not selling as well as some think it should, I have no regrets…after all writing is a whole lot more fun than publishing; and publishing (as easy as LULU seems to make it) is a whole lot more thrilling than trying to sell.
Sincerely, Paul Jr
What a great idea. As someone who is seeking feedback for his work I will be hassling you (politely of course) for a review soon. It’s not only publishing houses that are snobs but also reviewers too. I have come across a lot of places that will not review POD books. I understand why, but POD authors need reviews more than those who have a publishing contract, because the stereotype of self published work is that it is sub-standard and in a lot of cases that is true. Maybe my work is too, but I love it, I believe it’s strong stuff and I want good feedback to have it stand above the crowd. I hope you’ll help with that.
all the best,
Matt
Shannon,
What are your thoughts on the relationship between Borders and lulu?
Looks like through Borders, an ISBN can be purchased for $49 but not sure how the distribution works out.
Thoughts?
Just read your intro and would like you to know how grateful I am for your contribution to writers. I’m very glad to have found your review site.
What else is possible?
Stephen
What a great thing that you are doing for the unknown authors such as myself. If good deeds got medals like soldiers in wartime you would have a chest full by now.
I think it is wonderful that you have taken the time to review books, especially to those like me who are first time publishers and dont feel “secure” and want an honest feed back on their work. A lot of us have taken so much time and effort and put our hearts into our work and I want to thank you from everyone for doing what you do and giving all of us a chance. My mother is the only one who has critiqued my work and it would be nice to have someone else do that. thank you again

Shannon,
Congratulations on over 20,000 hits – wow!

Letting people know the status of their review request here is an excellent move!

Hello,
Hoping you can mention the InStock Self Publishing Conference on your website – it is a first time conference held July 18th in San Francisco (www.instockconference.com). We feature some successful self publishers, and offer panels on marketing and more to get authors and self publishers thinking strategically about their works.
Thanks,
Ashli
Finally this contest will be over and we can get the reviews on! I’m excited to read what LLBR has to say about “Minnie.” So far it has only been positive reviews, even when I encouraged the nitty gritty, so whatever “Minnie” gets, it’ll be an honor. I’m in the process of adapting “Minnie” for the stage, so cross your fingers! If everything works out, it could be in production soon! I’ll keep LLBR posted about it.
Thanks for everything!
Ashley Lane
Ashley,
How fantastic that you are adapting “Minnie” for the stage. I, for one, will be waiting anxiously for your updates on how the production is going. Fingers are now crossed (although it makes typing both books and reviews a little more difficult.)
I’d love to see the script once you have finalized it.
LK Gardner-Griffie,
Sure, I’d love for you to go over the script. It’s still rough and in the process of being written, but it should be done quickly. A writer’s dream is to see their work living and breathing.
Ashley
When you’re done, send it along.

Micha Berman will be on panel discussing his book Permanent Passenger: My Life on a Cruise Ship on Saturday July 18th in San Francisco.

I was wondering if any self-published author can get a review through your site. I published through iUniverse and am looking for honest avenues of review. Thank you for your time.

As a longtime book editor, I have worked with traditional publishers only, no POD companies to date. In September, I enjoyed meeting Scribd CEO and Cofounder Trip Adler at the 3rd Annual Carmel Authors & Ideas Festival, as well as talking with Erik Schmidt of Fast Pencil. My initial impressions of both men were positive and left me wanting to keep my finger on the pulse of their young companies. Indeed they are gaining ground; both these new tech publishing companies were featured in a front-page story in the San Jose (CA) Mercury News on Oct 8. The traditional publishing and POD worlds aren’t entirely separate; Scribd’s site features all of Simon & Schuster’s books, either excerpts or in their entirety.
The mention of “scribd” removes all credibility from your post. I bet they do have all of Simon & Schuster’s books online, most likely in their entirety and most likely with no permission or compensating going to the publishers and authors. They certainly have all of mine, which are copyrighted, and refuse to remove them. They’ve cost me thousands in lost sales. Sometime, go to google and look up “scribd” and “litigation,” or with “copyright infringement,” and read away. Make sure to bring a sack lunch, because you’ll be there a long time!
After a book is reviewed by a reviewer on this site, is the author of the book allowed to use an exerpt of the review on their personal website?
Hi JR-
Yes, feel free to use quotes from the review, as long as you give credit to the reviewer and to the blog.
Thanks,
Shannon
