This Fall marks the release of my own new book, Are You Sitting Down?, which is already available on Kindle. Unfortunately, the paperback edition is still weeks away, but at this point in the industry, I’m not rushing it. I’ve already made more of a niche for myself amongst E-Readers at this point in my writing career, more so than I will probably ever see in paperback sales alone. And I’m not alone. We’ve soapboxed enough about the Kindle, but in case you still aren’t convinced by the E-movement, then check out this story from author J.A. Konrath: eBooks and The Ease of Self-Publishing. Today marks the Kindle release of Draculas, a horror novel that he wrote with Blake Crouch, Jeff Strand, and F. Paul Wilson.

I came across a recent discussion on a review of Sara Gruen’s Ape House at Amazon with remarks to publishers setting the price of Kindle Ebooks to the same (if not more) than the list price of the actual hard copy book itself. For example, the list price of the hardcover book is $26.00. Amazon discounts it by 42% making it $14.99.

I’ve always been a cheerleader for investing in copies of your own book for various reasons. This always becomes part of the great debate of how much money an author should invest in their book to make it successful. Remember, if you are a self-published author, you wear many hats: writer, editor, publisher, and marketer. Before considering self-publishing, you should consider how much money you are willing to spend on marketing your project.

It is nice to be able to celebrate the good news of a friend, and I am very happy to say that we have reason to celebrate. The landscape of publishing is changing, in particular with the advent of the ebook, and self-publishing is increasingly becoming a viable option, and one which is beginning to grow legs as a door opener for other opportunities, as Boyd Morrison proved with his book The Ark, as was discussed in previous post Who Needs a Publisher Anyway?

Check out this article by Isia Jasiewicz from The Books Issue of Newsweek (first posted only July 30th, 2010): Boyd Morrison was finishing a Ph.D. in industrial engineering when he wrote his first novel. Five agents rejected it. Nine years later he tried again, and this time he did get an agent—after nearly three years [...]

Here’s an interesting email that landed in some Lulu’ers box last night. If you were having trouble finding your book in Lulu’s Search Option, apparently they were under attack by Gremlins but have now got it all sorted out. I have no idea what the 25% off at the top means, when they later say they’ll be sending you a 15% off special in a few days. Oh, and is it just me or does Lulu suggest you forward the special email to a bunch of people who drink. Why not nurse maids, dog groomers, and trash collectors? Just saying.

In March 2009, I began writing an article for LLBR about how to market your book on Amazon. The result of that article turned into a longer project that I decided to publish as a small book. Taking advantage of Lulu’s free ISBN at the time, I released it as a 93 page guide that included my POD Diary which I wrote throughout the first year of marketing my book, Stealing Wishes.

2009 was a great year for LLBR. We started off by adding Dan Marvin to our review team. We celebrated our one year anniversary. We changed the look and name of our blog. We broadened our short list to include a handful of other POD companies outside of Lulu. Then, we threw the short list out the window and opened ourselves up to all POD books! Oh yeah, and we reviewed 77 titles this year too, not counting Julie’s Quick Picks.
