A new free self-promotion LLBR is doing to give author's a chance to tell the world why they wrote a book!

Yesterday’s author spotlight on PJ Cowan got us to thinking… How can we help more authors like PJ, who obviously have a story to tell about their story?

Since LLBR started in 2008, we’ve reviewed almost 300 books. We’ve probably rejected more than that. Sadly, we can’t read them all. But we can give you a chance to promote your book even if we don’t review it. And indie authors love free promotion, right? Well, here’s your chance.

We’re starting a new project on the site this year called “Spotlight On…The Story Behind Your Story!”

We want to hear why you wrote and self-published your book. We’re not talking about soap box stories of how you always wanted to write a book and see it in print. We want to read stories about you writing a book for a sick or dying loved one, you did it to make money to build a college fund for your kids, you wrote it because your ex husband said you’d never finish it, you wrote it for your sick grandmother because she encouraged you to, and so on.

Real heart felt feel good stories! The story behind your story!

So, in 1,500 words or less, email us at llbookreview@gmail.com with your story. Also, include a jpg picture of you with your book. And if your story involves someone else, put them in the photo with you and your book too! We’ll post your stories here on our site for everyone to read and enjoy. So, the spotlight’s on you! We want to read your story behind the story!

Feel free to email us with any questions. Otherwise, send us your spotlight stories today!

I woke up in a somewhat reflective mood this morning and as my mind rambled through various reflections, I stopped when I came to one of the authors I have known for a few years, PJ Cowan. I met PJ when I reviewed one of her children’s books, and a friendship was formed. Over the years we have kept in contact, and I have read and reviewed more of her books, not because we’re friends, but because I find her books delightful.

Through the years, PJ would contact me and ask for advice on things. When we first corresponded, she was over the moon because someone thought her “little scribblings” had value. Then as time went on, she became frustrated because sales weren’t happening. Her frustration didn’t stem from the lack of monetary gain, but because she simply wanted to get her books into the hands of readers. She suffered a huge disappointment when she tried to give her books to schools and they wouldn’t accept them. So I asked, if she was willing to give them away, why she didn’t give them to shelters?

When she said she didn’t know where to start, I put her in contact with another friend, Linda Welch, author of the successful paranormal mystery Whisperings series, who was able to get her started and give her some pointers on how to proceed. She was ecstatic and the children loved her stories. But the next time I heard from PJ, she was distraught. Her husband had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and PJ herself has a degenerative eye condition which is causing her to go blind. She thought she’d have to give up her writing altogether, which saddened her, but her husband had to be her first priority.

Shortly after, I was delighted to hear that she decided she needed the creative outlet and she wanted to give away as many books as she could before she completely lost her vision. She proceeded to build up her list of shelters for donations to twenty. To assist her sight, she bought a 40-inch monitor and uses a magnifying glass to help her see, and hired an assistant to help with some of the things she cannot do.

Shortly before the holidays, I received an email from PJ — and she had been on my mind, isn’t that usually how things work? The email was to advise me that her husband’s condition was worsening at a rapid rate, and she needed to give him her attention and love. And her eyesight was also failing at a more rapid rate, and she would now have to give up writing. She was going to send a last batch of books to the shelters on her list, and would be moving to assisted living to ensure appropriate care for both her and her husband. Her one regret? To not be able to give more book donations.

And that’s when it hit me … this is somewhere I can help… and so can you. I’d like to issue a challenge to all: Purchase one or two of PJ’s books and send them to a women’s shelter or a children’s shelter. Give the gift of books to children without, and make an author, who can no longer follow her passion, happy. Let’s carry on PJ’s legacy… It’s not about the money — it’s about the children.

If you’re interested in reading my reviews of PJ’s work, they are:

Giggle Grump Gurgle

The delightful illustrations are done based on PJ’s concept by Mike Motz.

PS – My niece and nephew LOVE PJ’s books and David’s favorite books right now are the dragons because he gets to Rawr!

Tattered is the third novel in the heartwarming young adult series, Misfit McCabe. A little about the book:

What do Sunday afternoon court proceedings, cheerleader tryouts, and a book burning have in common? Katie McCabe is back in action.

After her nemesis Harvey is found guilty and sentenced to community service, Katie wants to believe her troubles are over, but Harvey won’t rest until he gets revenge. When blackmail rears its ugly head, she’s caught between friends and enemies putting her growing relationship with Tom at stake. Books go up in flames and Katie’s world rains down in tatters.

I know what you’re thinking… you’re thinking that I’m going to say that I got involved with LLBR through Twitter. Wrong. In August of 2008, Shannon Yarbrough, the founder of LLBR, reviewed Misfit McCabe, then by October I had come onboard as the second reviewer. I don’t get to review as many these days as I’d like to, but LLBR has grown and now has several people to help get the reviews out there. And it was LLBR who introduced me to Twitter (you knew I had to bring Twitter into it somehow). Now I’ll turn things over to Katie McCabe, the fourteen-year-old main character of Tattered.

Katie: Hi LLBR peeps! Thanks for having me today. Today I get to talk about two of my cousins, Uncle Charley’s sons, Matt and Mark. Matt is the oldest, then Mark, then Sarah, then Tim and me. Before I moved to town, I’d never met my cousins, or at least I didn’t think I had. When Matt picked me up at the bus stop I was floored. When he stepped on the bus and called my name it was like looking at an old picture of Daddy come to life. Tall, Blonde, and those clear blue eyes. In some ways it makes me feel better just to look at Matt, but then sometimes looking at him makes me miss Daddy more. Matt’s kinda quiet and he works hard. In fact, lately I hardly ever see him because he’s been working on building a house so when his girlfriend (who I haven’t met) comes back from her trip, he can propose to her.

Mark on the other hand, is noisy. He bursts through the door, his boots clomping on the floor. He has dark hair and eyes like Uncle Charley and a wickedly mischievous grin. Sarah warned me about how overprotective he can be, but I didn’t listen very well. She said that he won’t think any guy is good enough for me, so that’s one of the reasons I don’t talk about Tom being my boyfriend at home. Well, that and Uncle Charley won’t let me date. And Mark calls me Kit-Kat instead of Katie and has since the very first day after I arrived. It had something to do with the fit I threw during supper the first night…Mark thought it was funny. It was embarrassing.

LK: Put the puzzle below together for part of the code to receive a free Misfit McCabe ebook. A little holiday gift to yourself. As a reminder of what the book is about:

Heaven can go to hell.

Until her cousin slaughtered the supernal family, Anazakia’s father ruled the Heavens, governing noble Host and Fallen peasants alike. Now Anazakia is the last grand duchess of the House of Arkhangel’sk, and all she wants is to stay alive.

Hunted by Seraph assassins, Anazakia flees Heaven with two Fallen thieves–fire demon Vasily and air demon Belphagor, each with their own nefarious agenda–who hide her in the world of Man. The line between vice and virtue soon blurs, and when Belphagor is imprisoned, the unexpected passion of Vasily warms her through the Russian winter.

Heaven seems a distant dream, but when Anazakia learns the truth behind the celestial coup, she will have to return to fight for the throne–even if it means saving the man who murdered everyone she loved.

And NOW for the moment you’ve been waiting for…

* * * Drumroll Please * * *

And the winner is….

<span style="color: #ff0000; font-size: "10";"RC MURPHY!!!!!

And below is a screen shot taken of the Random.org randomizer with all of the entrants. Congratulations to RC Murphy and to everyone else, thank you so much for your participation and don’t forget to pre-order your copy of The Fallen Queen now.

Calling all authors! Tell us why we should read your book, by writing a review of your own book!

We’re always open to new ideas when it comes to self-publishing, marketing, and also reviewing. So, we have a new idea and we need your help. We’ve decided to give authors the chance to review their own books right here on LLBR. What are the benefits of reviewing your own book, you might ask? Well, first and foremost, it’s free publicity! FREE! It’s a chance to step up on the soap box and convince readers to read your book.

Many of us say that the reviews don’t matter. Reviews don’t encourage us to read a book or not. Reviews don’t discourage authors. Well, many of us lie too! There isn’t a single self-pub’ed author out there who doesn’t check out their reviews on Amazon. We may not always like them, but whether it’s two stars or five stars, we pay attention and read them. And while we shouldn’t take a bad review to heart, they still have an effect on us.

Now, don’t worry. LLBR isn’t about to become a self-reviewing site for self-published books. Heck, who would give their own book a bad review anyway, right? This is meant to be a fun experiment. But we aren’t looking for pitches either. Don’t try to sell us on why we should read your book. Just as if you were reviewing some other book on your own, tell us what you liked about it and why you’d read it. Tell us the good parts. And tell us the bad parts if you think there are any.

Start by writing your review. Try to keep it to a good 10 to 20 sentences. Email it to us at llbookreview@gmail.com along with a cover pic of your book, an author headshot if you have it, and include a link to where your book can be purchased (Amazon.com is a good one if your book is available there).

We’ll post a couple of reviews each week, calling this series Read My Book! Readers and blog surfers out there can chime in too. Read the reviews and post comments letting us know if you would read this book based on the review from the author. We all know that unfortunately Amazon.com’s star rating and reviews can make or break a product. Here’s your chance to see if your own review of your book would help gain any readers. Be creative! Heck, tell us who shouldn’t read your book and why!

So, take off the author hat and put on your reviewer book. Step outside the galley proof and take a good look at your book. Then, write a quick review and send it to us. Tell us why we should read your book!

It took several months for the book to become available on Amazon. Six months in fact. Having emailed Lulu support several times during that wait period and after getting no help, I decided to give up on the project and I retired the book immediately. It loaded to Amazon anyway though and while I have never promoted it, I did go ahead and load it to the Kindle where it has been downloaded enough to gain a sales rank in genres such as Writing Skills and Authorship.

Since the project was retired, but live on Amazon, I also expected never to collect any royalties from the sale of hard copies. My fault for letting my anger get the best of me. But that’s where good ole Lulu didn’t fail me…at least I hope they didn’t fail. To date, I’ve collected royalties for a total of just 5 copies: 3 in the US and 2 in the UK!

After much inner debate, I’ve decided to “unretire” the book. With that decision, I’ve lowered the list price of the paperback to just $9.50 on Lulu and the E-Book to just $4.50, cutting most of my royalties. This may or may not affect the current list price at Amazon where the book is $12.50, but can be purchased starting at $9.50 from third party marketplace sellers. I don’t care. More than anything, I want the book to be available to those who need it most…indie authors who may not have a lot of money to invest in their work, but have a lot of heart already invested in it. And may just need some help in the right direction.

The information presented in this book has not been changed. In fact, I have reviewed it against Amazon and the information is still as current today as it was a year ago when I compiled it. While I’m sure I could build upon the material, the purpose of the book was always to be a “quick” reference for indie authors. I do not feel the need to broaden it, and I believe it can be a very important “go to” book for authors who are out of money and looking for quick ways to market their own book on Amazon.com, the world’s largest online book seller.

So, to kick off the “rebirth” of my POD Pocket Guide, I’m offering ten free copies! That’s right! Ten free copies! To be eligible, just leave a comment with your email address on this post. On June 30th, I’ll pick ten winners at random. Yes, there’s a catch. First, you must live in the United States. Second, you must commit to leaving a review of the POD Pocket Guide on Amazon.com once you’ve read or used it. If you can meet these two requirements, then leave a comment on this post to enter the raffle.

Can’t wait till June 30th for a free copy? Buy or download it right now at Lulu.com!

Many of you know it as NaNoWriMo for short and it’s fast approaching! While the official site is more of a support blog offering forums, hints, tips, and more, it’s been going strong for 10 years. Participants begin on November 1st with only one goal in mind: write a 175 page novel (at least 50,000) words in one month. It’s more about enthusiasm than craft, and yes, much of the work written will be “crap.” But here is NaNoWriMo’s answer for why you should do it anyway…

There are three reasons.

1) If you don’t do it now, you probably never will. Novel writing is mostly a “one day” event. As in “One day, I’d like to write a novel.” Here’s the truth: 99% of us, if left to our own devices, would never make the time to write a novel. It’s just so far outside our normal lives that it constantly slips down to the bottom of our to-do lists. The structure of NaNoWriMo forces you to put away all those self-defeating worries and START. Once you have the first five chapters under your belt, the rest will come easily. Or painfully. But it will come. And you’ll have friends to help you see it through to 50k.

2) Aiming low is the best way to succeed. With entry-level novel writing, shooting for the moon is the surest way to get nowhere. With high expectations, everything you write will sound cheesy and awkward. Once you start evaluating your story in terms of word count, you take that pressure off yourself. And you’ll start surprising yourself with a great bit of dialogue here and a ingenious plot twist there. Characters will start doing things you never expected, taking the story places you’d never imagined. There will be much execrable prose, yes. But amidst the crap, there will be beauty. A lot of it.

3) Art for art’s sake does wonderful things to you. It makes you laugh. It makes you cry. It makes you want to take naps and go places wearing funny pants. Doing something just for the hell of it is a wonderful antidote to all the chores and “must-dos” of daily life. Writing a novel in a month is both exhilarating and stupid, and we would all do well to invite a little more spontaneous stupidity into our lives.

Besides support, you can upload your word count at the NaNoWriMo site and check the progress of others. There are web badges participants can post on their own site, word count widgets, pep talk forums and more. I myself have never participated but I admire anyone who can devote themselves to writing with such reckless abandon.

I’ve been a fan of the daily word count off and on over the past few years. I used to shoot for 1,000 words a day, but I quickly realized sometimes it was a task just getting a handful of sentences down. Some days were better than others, so I changed my style to a weekly goal instead which was usually two to five thousand. I also like to record my word count on my desk calendar at least once a week just so I can look back on my accomplishments. In Stephen King’s On Writing, he suggests you should write 2,000 words a day and don’t get up from your desk until you’ve done it. This is the same author who advises you should not take longer than three months to write a first draft, meaning you could write four novels a year (one for each season).

Well, “NaNoWriMo-ites” aren’t listening to King in November! Or are they? If you do the math, 50,000 words in 30 days is roughly 1,667 words a day (including Thanksgiving) so if you shoot for 2,000 per day you’ll actually reach 60,000 by the end of the month. But that 3 month goal of King’s sounds so much better because when’s the last time you saw a King novel that was under 60,000 words?

All the numbers aside, LLBR salutes those who will be participating in this years venture. And if you choose to later publish your work with CreateSpace, Lulu, Wordclay, or Outskirts, comes back and request a review from us and be sure to let us know your book was born in NaNoWriMo 2009!

Best of luck to those participating! May the best writer “pen!”
