Amber finds a genie named Jasper standing in front of her fireplace having just extricated himself from the samovar on her mantle. Think about that for a second. The book is full of stuff like that. Things go downhill from there in a hurry. Many of the world’s best comedians say that comedy is the hardest art form. Lauren Sweet has made it look easy. The book is funny throughout. She makes some of the jokes pay multiple times without their seeming tired. I laughed on almost every page. Some of the jokes work on multiple levels and pay on all of them.

What happens to special agents after they “retire” from doing “black ops” for a living? Cordell Logan runs a flight school with marginal success. What happens when his ex-wife shows up in his dilapidated office and asks for help finding her husband’s killer? Is it further complicated by the fact that the recently departed is a former comrade in arms who stole her from him? Of course it does.

It has been a long time since I had children of the age of this book’s targeted reader. So, I am not sure I am completely qualified to review it, but if this book had been available to me when I was reading to my children, I would have read this to them.

The first chapter, the last chapter and a couple of chapters in the middle are brilliant. The remainder of the book careens between “Catcher in the Rye” and “Animal House” both in style in a level of sophistication. The contrast between the highs and the lows is so sharp as to be painful.

This was pitched as a humorous take on a science fiction story and while parts of it are very funny and have a nice bite to them, the story goes on way too long. I had a lot of trouble finishing the book and put it down several times.

Eleanor Roosevelt’s impact on current American culture is easy to underestimate. This book puts her back in her rightful place in her historical era as well as pointing out the initiatives she started that continue to this day. In spite of the power of her words and the strength of the coalitions she assembled, the battles she fought continue to be fought.
