Greg Gifune does not write for those who find psychological darkness an uncomfortable territory. Gardens of Night is a disturbing journey between reality and psychotic breaks, both of which become blurred the further you read.

Joel Friedlander is a well established authority in the self-publishing world and the force behind The BookDesigner website. His old-school self-publishing efforts, before Print On Demand, led to his becoming a provider of customized self-publishing services—a book producer, to use his term. Much of his new book is culled from blog posts of the past years, with an emphasis on the why of self-publishing more than the how.

You wake up and it’s dark. The sun never shines in this strange world, and you are surrounded by an endless field of everyday objects. You have two options: survive or die. You hear strange sounds in the darkness, sounds that don’t come from a living human. Once you have created light, you find the sounds come from things that look like they might have once been human. Zombies. They have been cut into pieces, and put back together in strange arrangements to create monstrous beings. Two heads, six legs… you can only imagine. But how did they get his way? They didn’t do it to themselves.

Lots of us like to be scared on Halloween. Who doesn’t enjoy a good fright? But sometimes kids might become afraid of Halloween or trick-or-treating with all the monsters and goblins roaming about. That’s why Lynn C. Douglas has written a book for kids about Halloween that celebrates the holiday in style, with not too many ghosts and spooks roaming about. The fun black and white illustrations were drawn by Linda R. Zappe.

There is something eerily real about the stories brought to life by Robert Dunbar. He takes so much from real life that long after you are finished reading, you will find yourself checking the shadows or turning around to watch your back. Dunbar has a very astute way of taking things from everyday and putting a macabre twist on them, much in the same vein as Poe and Lovecraft. Today it is difficult to find a horror writer who is not obsessed with vampires or other mythical beings, but rather enjoys focusing on a realism that lingers long after the story is told.

We’ve all made sacrifices in our lives, but none of them could compare to ones that Greg’s character presents the reader.
The internal conflict that our protagonist struggles with every day is beyond human comprehension. He knew heaven once, and it was taken from him as a penitence for his sins. But how far can you fall as an angel? A lot farther than you think.
