Whisky connoisseur, art zealot and to top it all off, a private eye with enough quips and one liners to fuel the next twenty James Bond film scripts. Anthony Carrick is an ex- LAPD cop turned private eye and artist. His wife has left and the kid with her, now only his faithful feline companion around to hear his musings some would say Carrick has become a bitter man. Not far from the truth, Carrick is quite the cynical character but it doesn’t stop him exuding a sort of reluctant charm and wit.

Here is the recipe for False Witness: Add two parts action novel to one part John Grisham courtroom drama, mix in vicious Chinese gangsters and deceptive government agencies, sprinkle liberally with Christianity and stir until well mixed. What you end up with is a hot mess, but not in a bad way.

Think back in time to when you were young and had lost your first tooth. The excitement of putting it under your pillow, knowing that the tooth fairy would come and retrieve it and leave you some money in its place. And hoping, against all hope, that somehow you’d know when the tooth fairy came, and might sneak a peek at her as she carried away your tooth.

Craig Machen is a bad boy, or was a bad boy (if you can ever really shake that persona). It’s not entirely his fault, though. Rather, it is a result of a series of unfortunate life circumstances that led him to be self-destructive. Sex, drugs, rock and roll, and strippers. ‘Still Life With Brass Pole’ has it all- in excess. It is a drug and alcohol-induced road trip on which Machen takes the reader in this coming-of-age memoir.

Caz Tallis restores rocking horses for a living. We learn quite a bit about the horses throughout the story. Caz isn’t used to living an intriguing life. She’s more like the nice, hard-working girl who puts a lot of hours in for little pay, but pursues her art for the sheer joy it gives her of seeing the completed rocking horses like the day they were first made. Many of them come to her as broken down wrecks with pieces missing from lots of wear and tear. She enjoys the calm peacefulness of restoring the horses in her workshop and the casual friendship she has with James, her childhood friend, who she sees at least once a week.
