In the last three years, three extraordinary things have happened to me: in 2009 I moved in with my (then) girlfriend. In 2010 I married her. In 2011 I published the book she had systematically ripped to shreds. After rewriting it of course.
I’ve developed a fairly thick skin as a result of some of her comments (or blunt strikethroughs of entire paragraphs in red pen) and as a result I can now be more constructively critical of my own work. So, do I give Fezariu’s Epiphany five stars? Of course not. It’s not Tolkien after all or Pratchett or Goodkind. Then again, it’s not meant to be like any of those. Fezariu’s Epiphany is a funny kind of fantasy in that it’s a book that’s set in a fantasy world (which was 10 years in the making) but could take place anywhere.
The story is too lengthy to go into any detail here. Shall we just say ‘A young boy suffers betrayal; a grown man carries a heart of stone’. The story itself is more central than the world but I set my stories in Elenchera because it offers so much more to the reader in terms of possibilities and, most of all, the chance to escape from the ‘real world’.
So I give Fezariu’s Epiphany a pat on the back, rather than a score, for daring to be a bit different. It’s the first thing I’ve written that actually feels like someone else’s book so that must count for something. As for the mistakes I’ve made, and there are bound to be some, I’ll try and learn from them in my second novel.
