So, page by page all year long, I’ve been dissecting your book from the front matter, table of contents, dedications, prologues, first chapter pages, headers, footers, and more. We’ve finally reached the end of your book, and the end of this year long feature which I call Book Synthesis.

Just as Sabrina Grainger falls off a party boat into the Caribbean in 2009, so the reader is dropped right into the action of The Noble Pirates. R. L. Jean (a.k.a. Fiction Chick) makes the reader and her protagonist fend for themselves. Much easier for the reader who is aided by the accomplished storytelling than for poor Sabrina Grainger—a mother, wife, and attorney—whose plunge sinks her nearly three centuries into the world of pirates.

Your mind probably conjures up all sorts of central ideas when you think of a collection of poetry called I Wandered From New Orleans: Cajun food, the French Quarter, the Garden District, Mardi Gras, balconies, beads, ghosts, Hurricane Katrina, Bourbon Street, jazz, shrimp, Creoles… Is there any other place in this country (New York, perhaps?) that could be a cliche within itself because of all of these wonderful (and predictable) things that give New Orleans its ambiance and flavor?

Mitch Quillen has been receiving phone calls from his estranged father, Jim, who Mitch hasn’t visited since he was a boy. With his marriage on the rocks and his lackluster job failing, his wife encourages him to get away and to find out exactly why his father keeps calling. The two haven’t seen eye to eye since the last summer Mitch spent with him as a boy, and even back then their father/son relationship was tepid at best.

It’s been exactly one month since the release of my third book, Are You Sitting Down?.
December 1st marked the end of my month long give away over at GoodReads which I discussed in my last post. 974 people entered the contest to win one of the 5 copies I was giving away. And 159 people have added the book to their “to read” list. After the contest ended, I even received an email through GoodReads from another reader who was sad she didn’t win, and asked politely if I could spare another copy.

We received an interesting phone call today from a medical bookstore looking for “book panels.” Since we had no idea what that was, we asked the bookstore to ask their customer what a “book panel” was used for. She explained that it’s a sticker an author signs which can be mailed to a reader to put in the author’s book if the book isn’t present for the author to sign. The customer was actually talking about book plates!

The Jazzy series is about a little girl named Jazzy and the adventures she gets into. These picture books are meant for young children, perhaps those learning to read, and have bright illustrations which help move the story forward.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Although it’s for young readers (8-12) I think it could be enjoyed by any age group. The book is full of adventures and activities that young teens could relate to; horseback riding, skating, and listening to music, dances, relationships, shopping and homework. And of course there are adventures with good and evil and bits of magick scattered throughout the pages.
